As Malcolm, Check all over the inlet manifold for broken or split vacuum pipes and hoses. There are also rubber bungs which may have been knocked off or damaged.

I second that on the throttle body.....unfortunately, they can be quite expensive new.

Have you checked the Electro Hydraulic Actuator (Govenor) on the back of the Fuel Distributor? is theres petrol leaking there it may need new seals. Sounds similar to an issue I have been having but given Im still going through the motions with my issues, I cant be sure!
Cheers

Hi There I had similar problems. on my 300e saloon 88
Today my excellent mechanic took off the Jettronic petrol injection distributor head.

Underneath the head unit is the rubber intake boot.
The rubber had broken down ( I could just push my finger through it) so when the engine is hot it sucks in air and it stalls. He said he has seen it on 4 models he has done.
SO take or get someone to take off the injection dist head , remember to loosen the injector pipes , and ease it out, check the rubber boot. Good luck
BTW has anyone got one of these rubber boots as I need one NOW !!!

You should be getting the codes read BEFORE you do anything else.

Go from there, depending which codes (if any) are showing.

I can read the codes for you if you are anywhere near Berkshire.

The 2 previous posts are not the same layout as your car, so not applicable, so don't go looking for those parts in your engine bay.

Check the fuel pressure, too high and the engine will run rich, affecting idle more than anything. Had this problem on a porsche.
does the set up on your car have a mechanical airflow meter? if so this could be sticking or faulty (had this problem on an old cavalier)

if it was ok before you carried out the service, then it may well be the wiring loom, the w124 suffer a lot from the wiring once its been moved, E,G ( changed plugs ) the wires seam to break up under the sheath causeing shorts,
im not sure if this problem includes your modle buts its worth a look

i dont know if your car model has an OVP (over voltage relay protection) but if it does then the odd revving of the engine could be down to the ovp (at least it was on my car/w202)

if that isn't an option then look at your wiring harness

cheers
