...............................................

The excessive speeds could be defined as more than 50mph in a 30mph zone, 70mph in a 50mph zone or 90mph on a motorway. Ministers will consult, however, before determining the exact thresholds.

This could see friends, neighbours and colleagues encouraged to inform police about those who frequently drive while drunk. These drivers would get warning letters from their local force telling them to seek help and change their ways. They may also be followed while driving and subjected to spot-checks.

50 in a 30, 70 in a 50 i agree are excessive and should be 6 points, 90 on a motorway depending on road conditions not too bad, 3 points yes not sure about 6! Don`t think you`ll find many Police who would give you any more than a slapped wrist for doing 80.

Try driving at 80mph at M1 between Watford and Luton, you will get flashed rather than a slapped wrist .

At an indicated 80 mph on cruise control (and therefore perhaps a bit less in fact), I am often the slowest guy on the road and a hazard to shipping.

I sit in the nearside lane and traffic pours past.

Then the rain comes on and the situation is reversed - I move to the outside lane and maintain speed.

Speed and alcohol are no doubt factors in unsafe driving, but they are not the root cause. They can however be measured and enforced.

The real problem in my view is ignorant or inconsiderate driving, lane hopping, moving out without looking or cutting back in too early after overtaking. These are the things that cause contact, regardless of sobriety or speed, but I don't recall seeing them being identified as problems or leading to fines/points?:confused::confused:

So you are saying your original quote of driving at 80 is ok is wrong!

If you know what you are doing and know where you are driving.

I didn't quote it, it came from the paper, at least you don't get 6 points doing 80.

50mph in a 30 zone would be 66.66% faster than the legal limit. Therefore 70mph + 66.66% = 116 Mph - now thats more like it!

Doing 50mph in a 30mph should be an outright ban in my opinion, there is no excuse for that at all.

The best way to avoid speeding offences on the motorway is to remove the limit.......

We always work to the lowest intelligence of the group of people involved. That's how things have to work. If we were all of a good standard then it would be safe to drive faster on motorways (i wouldn't argue that raising the speed limit in built up areas is sensible). However, we have to share the roads with people who simply don't know how to drive. It is for THAT reason, we have to stick by the rules that keep THOSE people the safest without becoming impossible to work with.

In my line of work as a touring sound engineer i have to deal with large 3 phase power supplies at alot of the venues i work in. The systems i use never require more than 63Amps 3 phase and my hire stocks distribution is all tailored for this. I do however have the necessary cables to accept a higher supply if that is all that's available. 100 Amp, 125A 400A etc etc. HOWEVER, following on from "working to the lowest intelligence" i cannot make up a lead which goes from 125A to 63A without puttng the necessary circuit breaker inline on the cable at 63A. I would never try to pull more than 63A from the distro, nor would my staff/crew but as somewhere in the world there will be idiots that WOULD, i have to do this, costing hundreds of pounds. These so called "widowmakers" are safe in the right hands, but lethal in the wrong hands. Very much like driving at 80 or 90 mph in a decent car on a dry day on the motorway.

It is recommended to remove all evidences of exceeded speed limit in this website. Saw in the news someone was prosecuted based on that.
