Ignition Amplifier 500SL 1987 Help?

Hi guys,

new to the forum. My Ignition Amplifier apparently needs replacing for my 500SL 1987 (No spark). The MB quote is astronomical - in the region of a few £1000 and claim to have all the existing ignition amplifiers stock from Bosch. Can anyone assist me in my search for a new one or can the old one be reconditioned (preferably the former).

My 500SL 1983 had the same problem.. Removed the amplifier, opened it up and found a simple dry joint. Resoldered and problem solved..

When I refitted it I applied some heatsink compound to the back of the casting to help disipate the heat when running..

My 500SL 1983 had the same problem.. Removed the amplifier, opened it up and found a simple dry joint. Resoldered and problem solved..

I wonder how many of these things have been thrown away through a simple fault like that

I believe that many fail because the thermal paste dries up

I am going to do an article on this soon, the one that I have here probably failed as it had been take off and put back without cleaning off the dried up compound, and putting it back on the dried up paste made it worse as there would be no cooling at all.
The old paste must be scraped clean and new compound applied

Have now managed to remove the ignition amp unit. Have not attempted to repair it personally not holding out too much hope for my soldering skills. In discussion with a local garage who know an expert for Bosch and MB they say that he has never known a successful repair of such a thing! Would anyone out there be kind enough to recommend someone who would attempt it?

you would be better off finding a replacement, do you have the part numbers at hand.

V. Impressed by the speed of your replies- thankyou. The unit is v.small. However, There is no guarentee that the dry joint is the issue within the unit, the garage are 99.9% sure the unit is the issue, we can only assume from the replies above that this would be a good starting point. The thing is it is a sealed unit requiring the rivets to be delicately drilled out. Will do a quick search and see what I can find. Will try and source one from US or eslewhere as I fly there all the time as I believe a replacement is the ideal choice but not at the MB price - that is simply astronomical! Would be happy to send it to anyone willing. Can take photos and send them by email if it helps.

Further to the above. Have sent the ignition amplifier part to BBA Reman (US side) who returned it back as unable to repair. BBA Reman UK wouldn't even give it a go. ECU clinic attempted it but again say it is beyond repair. Details of why I don't have as yet. Struggling with this as the car wasn't used for approx 3 months and then the Amp never worked, I assumed it got damp and nothing more. Any final ideas would be appreciated. The ideas originally posted on this forum appeared simple but the specialists are unable to fix it or appear to identify the actual faulty component inside. Thoughts?

I think you need to keep a regular eye out on ebay UK, Germany and US to see if any come up for sale or bite the bullet and ring MB and see if you can haggle. Who makes the Module, if its Bosch then a Bosch center should be able to supply if for a lot less.

I opened one up the other day and they really are a joke, Bosch do not repair, they are re manufactured,cost of the bits is no more than £5 plus the cost of the casing
