Ignition coils and leads overheating?

Having just replaced the ignition coils in my '94 E280, 130k. I wonder if these break down eventually because of the heat under the alloy cover down the centre of the engine. It must get very hot in there! For the moment I have not replaced the cover. Anyone any experience or thoughts on this?
