The site is fantastic thanks to all those who help out, but I have another problem with my prized machine.
I recently have to wait for other cars passing by before I start the car up (190E2.6Manual) because of a loud clattering noise like electrical chattering or something.
If I have to go anywhere late at night it shatters the silence of our street and sounds like it won't start but won't give up trying, sometimes you get a sound like when you turn the key with your engine already running.
Also I've had recurring problem of ignition turning engine then go silent(with key still turned) then turning engine again, then silent then turns and fires, like the circuit breaking down. I have got NGK plugs but am going to buy bosch ones from Halfords unless anyone knows of anywhere that will just supply 6plugs and not have to buy two packs of four. The stalling problem is nowhere near as bad since knew fuel filter fitted, almost non-existent but more apparent when under load at night - lights on full, turning corner so power steering in use, clutch dipped so just at idle.
Have checked history for ignition related topic but found nothing similar to the racket this is making, it always starts but I could never sneak out of our street!

sounds to me like either your starter is knackered or the ring gear, nothing to do with the ignition!

Hi,
Right I think we've sorted the source of the overheating problem but need to know if Manchester based garage in Magazine is recommend or if its worth a trip to Birmingham. Also need ideas on the ignition problem, don't think its the starter motor because it will sometimes start properly/quietly.
Is it simple enough to change fan clutch and drivebelt?
Thanks again for all your replies they really do help - it helps to bounce ideas around.
Also does anyone use a parts centre that could provide anything from spark plugs to shock absorbers?

It's still the starter.  Probably the pinnion gear is knackered causing poor engagemet most of the time.

Starter motor - surley it can't be?!
7 out of 7 lately it started sweetly no chattering no noise - just turned over.
Also getting noise from clutch when dipped/pressed what does that mean?
If it is gearbox oil how do I check it fill it?
Is gearbox oil seperate from diff oil? Is it seperate from the engine oil on these cars?
Also one for Andy -  how much notice do you need for a days work on a car?
Has anyone been to the garage mentioned in the magazine thats based in Manchester? Would you recommend them? Please no criticisms because that would be liable/slander would it not?

The garage is called Greenvale Services, in Whitefield.
And taking the car to a mechanic is a last resort Ant, the car is a second car and only occasionally used so its a bit of a tinkering project for myself. If it does get too technical then I will definately 'pay' a visit, in the meantime I'll...........tinker about with it. Oh and its now done 10 out 10 perfect starts, just to throw me right off track!

Have you checked the battery?

If the battery is going flat, then you will get this noise. It happens because the starter solenoid first engages the pinion wheel and then close the circuit with the starter motor, which will then draw a heavy current. If the battery is on its last legs, this large current will cause the voltage to drop suddenly and the solenoid will release momentarily and the whole process starts again causing the repetitive clicking noise.

Bad grounding or loose/corroded terminals or connectors will have the same effect, preventing the flow of high current.

Yep you are right about this site being very good !

I would agree with Arnie - I'm nor an expert on Mercs but I've seen a number of older cars with exactly this problem - always either battery or usually corroded terminals on the starter circuit. Remove, clean re-solder do whatever, and you should see an improvement. Also take a spanner to the termial and make sure all the main heavy AMP connections are very tight - just touching won't do.

This would explain the 10 / 10 record as the fault will only occur when the system is under load or the lead has worked loose again.

good luck

Keith
