hi newbie to site

have vito 2009 van went for service at local garage, whilst there they went to start van but could not turn key, they checked main battery ok never had problem before.

they stripped out ignition barrell to check no problems no wires loose ect.

they have managed to get van started by pressing buttons on fob whilst key trying to be turned & have had success.

not all the time but sometimes when it does not start they get no dash controls lights for abs ect.

another time they get all lights up & windows ect work no problems but when they turn it off again put key in as normal no go.

they have to press the buttons on fob whilst trying to turn key.

anyone had this before would really appreciate help??

may be a daft question but have you changed the battery in the key?

It sounds to me as if they are trying to resynch the key with the electronic ignition system.

If the batteries are new then there may be an issue with the coil around the barrel lock - hence why they checked for loose wires.

Could the issue though be elsewhere?

I would say that a check on a STAR diagnostic machine would certainly pinpoint the problem.

I'm sure that someone else will come along and give some more advice.

i would suggest speaking to a indy with STAR, have the codes read and maybe recode the key back to the car.

it could be that the transponder in the key has broken and need replacing?

That's a good point. If the key has been dropped, especially onto a concrete floor, this could be the issue.
Have you tried the spare key?
If that works without issue then the one key is faulty.
