300CE ignition switch sometimes does not turn over the engine. It occurs when I have driven to a location and come back about rtwenty minutes later. I can hear the solenoid clicck (I think) but no effect on the engine. I have tried wiggling the gear lever in Park and Neutral but to no avail. Then, about five minutes before the AA are due to arrive (20-40 minutes), it starts normally. If anyone has any ideas on the matter, iwould be grateful to know.

Sounds like a faulty solenoid switch on the starter motor, but first check the terminals are tight and that the chassis to engine earth strap terminals are clean & tight. Don't think it has anything to do with gear selector lever, or you wouldn't get the 'click'.
Good luck.

could also be

the motor winding/slip ring burning out. My Beemer gave me similar symptoms for a long time. It would only be a problem if the starter stopped at a particular bit of the slip ring. At all other bits, it worked fine. If it got to the "sticky bit", I'd have to give it a push start.
