Hi Sorry to say this is not really of help. As I understand the Ignition Switch Module is on the steering column (around about knee/shin level). I have read that you can get a "dummy" one that work BUT wont do the steering lock. Does anyone know about these please
Hi Dreamer No2 This part bolts on to the steering column about Knee /Shin level, it releases the steering lock it also enables the car to be started and Mercedes Crawley know it as the Ignition Switch Module (so does the bods on YouTube). Martin
Hi.....Now I have had time (to explore the Internetttt) I have found what I am looking for. There are lots of companies out there that will sell and programme an Emulator to get around the problems with the ESL [Electronic Steering Lock] Thank You for your assistance. Marty
Sorry Note I describe it as the Ignition Switch Module because that is what they called it at Merc Crawley but doing the research I now know it is generally know as the ESL...... Sorry for the confusion. Marty
Just put key into ignition, and nothing! No “click” when the car recognises they key, and when key is turned nothing at all. Battery ok, car locks and unlocks on the key. I suspect the EIS unit, but not sure what else it could be. Any ideas anyone?
Hi I have got EXACTLY the same problem. Try undoing the steering wheel adjuster (if its manually adjustable NOT electric) and ,as the AA man did to mine banged it down twice and off it went. If your steering wheel adjuster is electric the only way I can see around this is to somehow get access to the lower part of the steering column to give it a jolt. On my 2010 W204, as I have no fault code, it is the electronic steering lock stuck/sticking.
This is, as I have just found out, a common problem on Merc's. Mercedes MAY have the ESL [Electronic Steering Locks] on back order, I have looked at an Emulator which you will still need to programme but there are plenty of locksmiths on an auction site that can supply and program them. TRY TO GET IT DIAGNOSED IF YOU ARE NOT SURE YOURSELF Marty
I thought you were looking for suggestions...or am I missing something?
That unit will not throw a code, or at least mine did not.
I repaired mine with a £6.00 motor from Amazon as will be seen from my previous posts.
Do not allow this to continue, as if the lock finally fails in the locked position it will be a far bigger job to remove the unit.
Hi Sorry I did not read it properly I thought it was someone reporting the same problem.
I have looked at the motor solution but I have read some reports that if the motor is on its way out perhaps the rest of the unit might be coming to its life end
Thanks Marty
Not a lot in the module to go wrong other than the motor.
I have not seen anything else in the module going wrong.
Again do not keep going until it fails permanently in the locked position.
It will be 10 times harder to remedy it then
I fitted an emulator to my 06 Jeep , it has the Mercedes om642 engine and gearbox and ignition column lock.
My Jeep gave a code condemning the ignition key (SKREEM key fault ) but this was because the ignition did not receive the ready to go signal from the steering lock.
It locked and unlocked when it felt like it, had to get ignition on and have steering lock unlocked then remove battery live and fit emulator then remove key and reconnect battery and after that all ok.
I used this emulator , plug and play as stated or they can program it .
My lock is picture number 4 in this link below, common e class type
Here we have a Fobfix Jeep ESL Emulator. The Electronic Steering Lock module in Jeep vehicles is prone to failure, leaving you with a vehicle that will not start. The unit features a single easy to connect plug to make installation as simple as possible.
Hi I have now ordered a replacement motor for my C Class. I watched a really interesting video from You Tube and found extremely useful. The only thing I think may be an issue is to remove the 4 pins that hold the ESL case closed apart from that it looks straight forward. I will let you know when the part arrives and I fit it Thanks Marty
HOW TO remove fix ESL/ELV/EIS w204 w212 C E class mercedes benz common fault (2 Parts)
The pins can be difficult to remove. There is a steel insert in the middle of the pins that makes it hard to drill them out. Some suppliers include an angled drift for taking the pins out. But that problem fades into insignificance compared to the effort to get the unit out if it fails in the locked position
Can some one please explain this bolt or thing that releases the steering lock and enables the car to start I have had this steering lock no key turning so car won't start problem for over a wk
