I started to remove the key barrel for the ignition switch as per the instructions on the other MB website.
Plenty of jiggling as instructed but the switch would not come out.

Removed the two bits of 2mm wire and sprayed in plenty of WD40 but the key would not even turn after that.

Tried drilling but the bit snapped as the first part of the switch/lock is hardened.

I ground through part of this with an engraving tool but the two halves will not come out of the black switch/lock surround.

I will try cutting it into quadrants and take it from there.

Any advice gratefully received.

OK, an update.

I had to resort to the Dremel but the lock and shroud are now off.
All i need is a new shroud to put everything back as it was with a new lock cylinder .

If anybody needs to remove the ignition switch if the key has been lost or barrel will not turn, then just grind the front off the shroud and the first (hardened) part of the key barrel. Insert the 2mm release wire in to remove the barrel, then you can see the locating tangs for the metal shroud at the back.
Use the 2mm wire again and the remains of the shroud will pop off.

New shroud about £8.;)
