Hello and welcome to the forum.

Try turning the knob in the cluster that zero's the mileometer, give it a few sharp turns and hopefully they will come back on again

All the lights you mention will dim when the mileage knob is turned counter clockwise.
All the lights you mention will brighten when knob is turned clockwise.

Pushing knob inwards will reset mileage trip counter, it will also light mileage and clock if keys are out of ignition.

The cluster on this vehicle is the same as the W202 C280. The 'stalk' that resets the mileage is the same that dims the instrumentation lights. Turrn anti-clockwise to dim lights unless that little stalk has been broken off.

the clock and the mileage counter are not the problem they are working okay.
the lights affected are speedo, rev counter, hazard light window switch lights and the automatic gear selector lights, the heater display lights are not affected

I would revert to Malcolm. Turning the knob should dim the lot.

I had this on my W124 Mercedes.

Scared the crap out of me.

Try toggling the brightness up and down with whatever controller you have. Otherwise, I'm lost.

Just checked my own car, every illumination light in the cabin can be dimmed or brightened by said knob.
Dome light, hazard and other adjacent switches, all heater controls, window switches, the PRND32 and all clocks in cluster, so that must mean, I think? that the are all on the one circuit.

Thats correct Dec and the little red fuse when blown on the rear of the cluster, puts them all out

This might have nothing to do with the dimmer I reckon all are separate faults in that bulbs are gone or have poor contacts, he/she could try replacing the bulbs in instrument cluster and the PRND32 and see if that solves some of the faults.

If all the window switches don’t illuminate then that is probably a connection in the wiring as all the bulbs in switches cant have all gone at the same time.

I don’t think there is a fuse in back of a 1996 cluster, but later ones may well have one, but then that’s only what I think.

I wonder if you know how to replace the illumination light /led? on the ML270cdi.

I can just see the mileage but no illumination at all.

As well, I don't see the engine diagnostics light when I start the engine. Could this also be a bulb replacement?
Any advice would appreciated and how to remove the cluster to get at the bulbs.

Ian
