Illuminated vanity mirrors - what is and isn't standard issu

Hi all,

I'm buying a 2nd hand 97R C class Elegance, however whilst it has the pull down vanity mirrors on both driver and passenger blinds, neither of them light up.

I'm being told that they wont light up...ever, as they were not standard on the model and they must have run out of non light up mirrors at the factory so put these illuminated ones on instead. Apparently to make them light up will require the whole dash to be taken out which is too costly.

Sounds fishy......

Can anyone verify this for me? Does your C class 1997 have illuminated vanity mirrors? was it an optional extra?

Sounds very fishy to me too.

MB don't run out of parts like that.

Probably the mirrors were damaged and someone fitted these from another car or ordered the wrong replacement part. Check the paintwork and trim around the front side windows for signs of damage or respray. Sometimes the visors get broken when cars a broken into to steal the radio.

It is strange that both passenger and driver mirrors are like that, though.

No, whoever told you that is mistaken. You can potentially fit these mirrors to any of the newer mercs and the only thing you have to open up is the interior light switch.

Thanks for all your help.

I found out from a sales assistant that illuminated vanity mirrors were an option on an R reg C class Elegance. However i'm confused as the one I'm getting seems to have them on but perhaps not all of it is there.

Looking at that link, I'd probably only need to the contact clip to get them working which is cheap enough.

I'll try and get them to do it for me in the deal though as at least I can prove that you don't need to take out the whole dashboard....thanks to Shude for some excellent photos of the whole thing which are perfect for evidence in this sort of situation.
