Vertical, at the back of the engine, acessed from under the bonnet, not underneath.

Don't feel too foolish about asking, as i had the same problem when i changed my filter for the first time. Its not where you'd expect to find it, that's for sure.

Found it! Thank you for your assistance, The ****** thing was hiding under the air cleaner body (it couldnt have been anywhere else when I think about it). I guess it was a little dark at 9pm. Again thanks.

Nothing to be ashamed about, I had to think where the oil filter was when I got my 129 :D

Likewise - after a lifetime of filters accessed from underneath I had to resort to Mr Hayes (I had wondered what that black thing with 25Nm written on it was).

The chances are is that you have a dip stick, when you get your next car you will not have one:confused:

...assuming that's an oil level measuring device you are refering to ;).

OK it was what I was referring to, they stated to go out of fashion in 98

I hate not having one :(
