hi guys im new to the forum, i have just bought a a170cdi, and ive been to hell and back!!!!! the radio had smoke coming from it!(sorted) pipe attached to the turbo disappearded! (sorted) now i have no power when the cars warm, it wont let me rev past 3.1-3.6k revs when gone on a small journey, when rev it can see little air bubbles coming from diesel filter maybe that's it? i do have access to tools, and fairly technical minded but need some one to put me in the right direction, as im new to diesels if i leave it to cool, or what ever it decided to do for 5 mins when left it will rev fine and i have power back, the coolant bottle seams about right temp, rad is nice and warm, no excess smoke from exhaust, please help me or im going to burn it tomorrow!

thanks alot

Alex

No power and restricted revs implies safe mode. You can guess and try things but I'd be temted to bite thye bullet and get the fault codes read, ideally at a reputable indie. This is going to give a much better idea than we can guess here. Normally, if there is an air leak at the filter you'd have starting problems. As you haven't I suspect this is ok. Where are you, perhaps we can recommend someone.

ive gone though all the receipts in the car and i found some thing about P0470 code fault, the rest is all faded or 1470 pressure converter:boost pressure control deviation, would this explain lack of power and limp mode?

thanks

Hi .I don't own a diesel car, but I have had experience with diesel tractors and excavators. Usually bubbles in the fuel system suggest that there is a leak allowing air into the injector system or the system has not been bled properly. According to other posts on this forum , the Mercs have a self priming system. I am thinking that there is a possibility that you have this problem and that the injectors are not functioning properly because of fuel starvation arising from the presence of air in the system. One solution is to open the injectors one by one whilst cranking the engine gently to purge any air in the system. This is a wild guess on my part and it could be some other problem . However the presence of bubbles clearly suggests that the fuel system is not airtight.
You might try looking for signs of diesel running out of some hose or pipe or the fuel filter.

Just to finish off Cnicks, as i said the CDI engines have a self priming system to purge the air out of the injector system. In my experience the self priming is not always a foolproof purge of the air in the system. You may perhaps be thinking of the different compression ratios between a disel and a petrol motor. The diesel has much more compression because of the lack of spark plugs to ignite the fuel / air mixture where the diesel relies on the compression of the fuel mixture to ignite it.
There is little if any difference in the injector pressures between a diesel and a petrol engine.
My recommendation, to the victim member, was not to take out the injectors but to loosen them to the point that if there was air then he would see a dribble of fuel plus air bubbles coming out from the still intact but now loosened off injector after cranking over the motor.
This remedy has been often used succesfully on excavator motors close to ten times the size and power of the motor in question .
When all else fails one reaches for the "Start ya Bastard" ( May be known by more sedate terminology in your neck of the woods).
