next tuesday, i'll be driving this 1981 Geländewagen 300GD from Stockholm to Helsingborg in Sweden, around 600kilometres or so,

now it's not mine, but being bought for my wifes' mum's partner and as i'll be in stockholm on business i can do him a favor and drive it down,

thing is, the car looks a bit old and i'm wondering what an old 1981 gl is capable of speedwise and handling,

can it do 110km/ph with ease or am i dreaming, any Geländewagen 300GD owners out there who'd care to share their feelings on the car

photos below

cheers

Excellent vehicles the G Wagons and it should do 110k's although don't hold your breath getting up to that speed ;-)

yeah it is malcolm and russell, i look forward to the drive as long as it doesnt brake down,

do any of you know what would be a common failure on this car ? i'm not familiar with it at all (apart from looking for one for him, he's been waiting years for the right one at the right price, and we'll fix it up together/rust etc...)

by the looks of the car it hasnt been driven in a while so i'm a bit nervous

The worst thing if its been standing is rusty brakes, so find a quiet road and do some hard stops, if the car stops easily then they are OK

Good luck, I know nothing about those things, I have heard of a G string, I had one on my violin

I drove an 88 G300 for a while as a breakdown vehicle. Very robust, very simple, very slow ( this is a good thing when you get to a bend:( ) Never broke down but I wouldn't want to drive one for 600k. Not very good on fuel either. Good luck:wink:

Anyweb,

I think it has the 300D engine from w123. It is a 88BHP engine that does around 155kmh in a w123 saloon. It is probably a 4-speed gearbox.
Keep in the outer lane and keep an eye on the fuel gauge.

My sister lives in Sweden and they have a Toyota Land Cruiser. Plenty of opportunity to use a good 4x4 in Sweden.

1/ Make sure the lights are good - it is dark most of the time when it is not summer
2/ Make sure the tyres are good - odd laws for studded tyres ensure all the roads need a re-surface in March
3/ Make sure it is well serviced - large parts of Sweden are North of the Arctic Circle - it is not the place to have a flat battery!!
4/ It is a big place with big Elks - make sure your brakes and suspension are good!!
5/ Join the Swedish AA - See above!!
6/ 110KM/PH depends entirely on the season and weather - I would not try it on one of the ice roads in January but may be OK on a motorway in July.
7/ My biggest tip for old cars, treat them gently - they last longer.

You must know my Sister and Brother in Law then?

Is it snowing where you are?

It seldom snows in Sweden until Nov, some years it does not snow until the new year. I lived there until 1996

I loved Sweden when I went. The scenery was beautiful and the women were breathtaking.:D

On another thread elsewhere an owner claimed to have done 650,000 miles from new on original engine; sadly he had to replace the auto box at only 500,000 miles. Probably a Friday car.;)

hi guys,

back to the topic, i've got the cash now and will purchase the car tomorrow, i've been asked to verify that it can switch between 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive, is this an option on the GL ?

if so, how do i activate it ? via a gear knob on the floor behind the gear stick ?

please let me know

wish me luck, i'll bring my 3G laptop with me so may need assistance on route.

cheers

We all wish you luck and a good drive, I do not know these things but the 4 wheel coupling knob is normally by the gear shift
