I've had 3 W124 Estates over the past 10 years or so. My current one, 1986 230TE is still a fine car, and my other half uses it every day for the past 3 years or so, doing maybe 15000 miles a year.

But now she tells me that she wants a newer car - I'll get a late 1994 model I said.

She said she wants a Ford Focus.
A FORD FOCUS!
Something a bit more sporty she said....

This could be it guys. I may have to leave this forum. I may not have posted much over the years, but you've all given me great advice and ideas.

Now, I know there's a very good Focus forum, I've had a peek, and they all seem really helpful to each other, but, well, it's just not the same.

It's not over yet, but I can't afford an SLK; we really need a hatchback or an estate, but it's not looking good.

This could be goodbye

I know, a FORD!
If she'd have said, how about a Beemer, 3-series touring or whatever. Well, I could have coped.

Hey, even if she'd have said, Audi. Or a Honda!

Could be worse. Could have been Peugeot.

But a Ford.

I deserve better....

Nowt wrong with a Focus? I have a Merc and a Focus, but i must admit the Focus is for work use only, saves the Merc from the daily wear & Tear, after driving the Merc the Focus is like driving a wheelbarrow.

I detest that kind of ignorant tosh.

You might be better off on bus, you clearly know nothing about cars.

Is this typical MB drive attitude?

The Focus is a great car and the depth of engineering is surprising - particularly to anyone who's owned an Escort. Just look at the boot & door hinges - they don't look strong enough to last 5 minutes, but they do and they save weight

I've also seen a Focus RS that somersaulted into the gravel trap at Redgate at Donington Park. The driver flipped it and it landed on the top of the passenger A-pillar. Airbags deployed, car written off, driver walked away. Top of A-pillar punched down about 2", roof rippled, rest of car unmarked apart from scratches. Very, very impressive

My problem with the Focus is the way it rides. It handles very well, but I like my spine the shape it is. Like most modern cars it's too stiff, too unyielding and a hell of a shock after a W124

I'd rather have a ford focus than travel on public transport.

For folk's sake, he's having a psuedo-snobish joke!

Get yourself a grip and post a "sense of humour failure" question in the relevant technical section.

Hey all, thanks for putting a smile back on my face, and that's all of you.
Thank you.

Frankly I think my real gripe is that I won't have an old Merc estate to tinker with, for the first time in well over 10 years. I actually enjoy working on the old girl (that's the car guys, not my significant other)

My main car's a beemer diesel and I've never even added oil in 100,000 miles.

There's nothing that I can fix on it without a laptop.

I've even put scaffold boards across the top of the Merc, and used the roof as a platform to re-tile my porch! Don't think I could do that in my Beemer or a Focus. Iincidentally, I drove a couple of Focuses, (Focii?) as hire cars and I have to say, they were both cracking cars, one diesel one petrol.

Cheers all.

Hi,
Completey opposite opinion i,m afraid, i use Hertz hire cars at work too, and there always Focus's or Mondeo's i found them noisy and gutless (can,t comment on Focus diesel as only had petrol) but like Hannah said better than public transport.
Though i agree door hinges some other points very good theres no replacing the build quality of a German car.

ford versuse w124

well, my wifes mum's partner had his sons car stolen recently.

it was parked next to his old w124.

the ford escort estate was a banger in every sense of the word rusty old and used. but it was his sons first car...

to cut a long story short some low lifes needed a ride and hot wired it, they broke into it using a screwdriver to open the lock on the door, they then snapped the central locking with a quick twist of the steering wheel. finally, they pulled off the plastic covering the underside of the steering wheel and removed an electronic item on the opposite side of where you insert the key.

it detaches with ease.

by inserting a screwdriver into this small piece of marvelous ford engineering you can start the car with a twist. And that's what they did, drove it away, only to be found a week later in the same shape it left except for the steering wheel lock broken, the plastics removed from the underside of the steering wheel and that electronic device out in the open

why didn't they rob the merc beside it ?

harder to get into ?

i think so...

cheers
