Immobiliser problem

Model C180 1996 Esprit, infa red key operates locks, and it is just not working, I cannot open or close the car or indeed start the engine, put new batteries in the key and it still doesn't work, think the whole system is confused HELP?

1996 is close to the change over time for DAS system so if youv'e got the square type key with the flick out blade (early type) when you press the button you should see a red light emitt from the lense end briefly if not batteries in wrong or faulty key if it does light up open drivers door press & hold lock button and switch ignition on within 10 sec's still pressing button then take key out of ignition and operate key lock/unlock several times make sure u press buttons for slightly more than 10 sec's.if still not work check the interior mirror red led still working if not try another mirror.if ok problem is deeper.
If your key is sort of triangle in shape (later type)when buttons pressed a red light emitts from just above lock button if ok needs further investigation poss. key fault.if no light try batteries again (can go flat in packets)or key is faulty.
