Immobilizer driving me mad!

Hi all,

I just upgraded from a 190e to an E220 (95 model) and it's great! The thing that's driving me mad at the moment, though, is the immobilizer system - if I turn off the engine for a couple of minutes, I have to get out of the car, lock it, and unlock it again, before I can start it. In the manual, it talks about sensors in the rear view mirror, but mine doesn't seem to have them. Is there any other way of getting around this?

Many thanks,

Jim

I have a kinda recollection that this model suffered from alarm/ immobiliser problems and i know a few ppl who had them disconnected..im also sure there was a wire under the passenger carpet that could be disconnected and the car would drive. have a word with some of the indies or try and get some of the older guys in the service departments and pick their brains, and post again for a few of these guys on here will have ur answer

Is it an MB alarm which works from the standard flip out MB key? If so, PM me & I will "try" to guide you through the disconnecting of the "passive arming" side of the alarm. The alarm will still work as it did but just won't arm itself after leaving it for a minute.

Hi Type49,

Apologies for the slow response - I've been trying to work out how to PM in this forum - it seems I need to have made 25 posts before I can... Is there any other way I can contact you?

Best Wishes,

Jim

My 94 220te has had the original removed and a Cobra system fitted for this reason --Cobra works fine and even closes windows and sunroof if the are left open

My E280 ('96) has the infra red system, and also immobilises itself about a minute after turning the engine off. It doesn't set the alarm though. If I leave the ignition switch on position 1 after stopping the engine, it won't immobilise itself. Same if I'm loading the car: immediately it's unlocked, I turn the ignition to position 1, and all is well. There are 2 types of infra red system on the W124, with different option numbers - 880, and 885, with different procedures for resetting. The instructions in the handbook don't relate to most UK spec cars - confusing.

Same problem

Hi, My 1996 cabrio w124 is having the same problem, it has the flip out key fob which opens the door and deactivates the alarm.

If I dont start the car after 30 seconds or so of opening the alarm comes on and it is immobilized. If I switch off the ignition the same happens and I have to lean out and open/close the car using the sensor on the drivers door. Can someone forward the details on disarming this passive protection or where I might find the switch to turn off the whole system?

Thanks in advance,

Michael

As my previous post, if you leave the key in the first position in the ignition, the immobiliser won't arm itself, neither will the alarm.

Hi,
You don,t have to point it at the drivers door its the rear view mirror, no need to lean out, these systems (as far as i,m aware) were given Thatcham approval, and part of that approval required passive arming, turning off the passive arming wasn,t possible.
My C230K has this system. i have had it 9 years and 125,000 miles and never found this feature an issue, just get in put the ignition on to position 1, puts the stereo on in this position, if i get in the car and not immediatly going anywhere i would normally be listening to the stereo anyway.
