Bought a dinky PCL Air Impact gun. Never had a compressor before, so have a few questions. Manual is just a parts list and tons of health And safety warnings.
Apparently its a reasonable make? Seems extremely solid and well made. But for £65 new in heat sealed bag & box - off eBay I am not expecting the world.

If you tilt the gun up and down, the shaft moves in and out by 1.3 mm, with a very solid clunk in each direction, note it rotates very smoothly With no rotational play in either position.
Is this normal? (It is a twin hammer action Max. 270 Nm, max free speed 10,000 rpm) PCL blurp says its a Heavy Duty cycle Prestige range. I am hoping the twin hammer action is applied on the “rotation” movement and not On the “in and out” movement (like say my Makita HD Hammer drill/chisel) ?

Other question, on the back.

The spring loaded ball selector has full Reverse and Forward but interim Marks 1 and 2?
Sadly no mention of this in the manual.
Any idea how this works? Is it Reverse, and Speed 1, Speed 2 and Full forward Speed. Or does this Limit the Torque?
Note compressor arrives on Tuesday so can’t try it.

The “manual” says lubricate before and after use, with Air Tool Oil. WTF is that? And can I just use Mobil1 0W40 as I have that?

Finally on the Box it says I must use an Air Whip because the vibration denotes this coupling as subject to H&S Regs - Looks just like a small version of my 10Meter 10mm ID hose - Does one really need to spend another £11? When it wont get much use?

Any help appreciated, specifically If anyone understands air compressor would they pm me, if they are willing to discuss “silencing” compressor inputs with filter silencers. I need to understand air flow rates etc.

Can I use this impact gun as an air ratchet, i.e. stop pressing the trigger before the vicious hammer impact action starts? Or are they vicious all the time?

(note this was really bought to undo Honda Lawnmower blade and Rotostop centre screw, i.e. one doesn't need to “hold“ the flywheel with a strap wrench, involving removing the magneto Etc, so no real issue if you can’t)

Your Mobil 1 oil will be a bit on the "thick" side ..... it needs a "thinner" air line oil.

I can offer a bit of general air impact driver advice.

Yes the shaft will have a bit of movement in it.

1 and 2 are likely to be force the impact gun applies. If you set it to 1 then it's more suitable for smaller nuts; less chance of shearing them off. However impact guns are superb at not shearing bolts.

They are generally too fast/brutal to use as a regular ratchet.

Oil, probably something like 3 in 1 will do. I tend to use a bit of whatever I have to hand.

On the whip hose, I tried it and then removed it. You're supposed to have one because the vibration is bad for the air line connector. Mine survives just fine with a connector on the gun.

Clunking in and out is normal. 1 and 2 are torque limited in the tighten direction. If you’ve bought it for wheelnuts you’d have been better with the 1/2” model. Spin up nuts on lower torque then manual finish with a torque wrench. You’ll need a manly compressor if you want to use it a lot. I’ve used ATF for lube for years and years. Each airline outlet in my shop has an automatic oiler on it. You just fill the reservoir about once a year.

Rattle guns have their use, these days I mostly use my ryobi impact 18v.
As above 3 in1 or whatever hydraulic oil I have about.just a few shots before use.they are very tolerant of abuse I have a snap on 1/4drive a 1/2 and 3/4 drive.but as said rarely use them now .repeated use of 1/2 inch requires decent near 14cfm or more.
