Has anyone got any recommendations. Apart from the obvious evidence in event of an accident, I'd love to film some of the idiotic driving I see on a daily basis

I recently bought a little cheapy off ebay. Less than a tenner.
Perfect for what I needed but limitation (which may be the same with many others) was the memory, whaich was only about 2hrs. Also it had a narrow field of view.

If you have an android whatever you could download one of the dashcam 'apps', mount on the dash and record on that.

Had one for about 6 months in mine cheap off eBay. They are about £20 with a sd card. I need a replacement as the blooming charger end thing has broken and don't know how to replace/repair it.

Didn't record anything really exciting though thankfully. Google some in Russia

Crap at night on this one I had, others seem better

I've got the autowatch product in my car. It records both whats going in front of me and the activity within the vehicle. It records sound too. Takes a standard Sd card and has a button for recording and keeping 'incidents'. So if there is a situation that i'd like kept I press the button and the preceeding and succeding 15 seconds are kept in an incident file on the Sd card. It also has GPS built in so it knows where you are.

Its not a cheap solution at circa £199 but it comes with a neat GUI showing the two recordings, speed, g, yaw, location on a map etc.

.... too many cars!
Ive been looking at these devices now and wonder is the information gleaned from them admissible in court.

Any legal eagles here?

What a minefield. There are literally hundreds and prices from £10 - £200, this is gonna take forever, but will get a cheap one initially. As for court use, surely anything can help, not been to court for a road accident yet, but there's always time :)

Having a video of an event may just convince the other party they can't tell any porkies to the police or insurance companies.

Exactly.

It is also useful for recording number plates of vehicles 'just in case'.

There is apparently a spate of incidents where a vehicle overtakes you and then jams the brakes on hard so you hit them. Of course its your fault and five people get out of the car in front all complaining of stiff necks and bruising etc. Next thing you know massive insurance claim against you. The camera will make them think twice about a claim and not least help the police track them.

Danger is, if you once go over the speed limit and they get your camera, they'll use it against you.
Happened to a bloke in Belgium caught speeding with his Aston Martin Vantage.

Answer is don't speed?

Your camera is the last thing you need to worry about. If they've stopped you, you're toast already.

Would your camera be admissible evidence anyway?

I wouldn't say anything about a camera until the police is there and simply show them the evidence. Telling the other party straight away you have a camera in the car can lead to more aggression.

 Says the guy who drives an AMG himself... :D

In this case, it was. The idiot had actually been stupid enough to post a video of him driving his car on youtube. It showed the car was speeding (it did not show the driver).
Still, as there are so few AM's around in Belgium and probably using youtube's and the internet's "data protection", police took the time to trace him and he was fined in court

police will take a statement before looking at video.
I had filmed a drunk oik rip of a wiper while passing my home.
And offered the copper the vhs tape.
After all was done only then did he check it, with a big resounding yes.
It went to court and i was award £100, + the oik had equivalent fines.
A good result :)

Been thinking about one of these for some time.

http://www.blackvuehd.co.uk/BlackVue_DR380G_HD.php

I like the idea of the Park function, watching over the car when parked up..

I'm very happy with mine - easy to fit and good resolution. I took a risk and purchased off ebay (Taiwan) - was all ok (I put a post on the other side re fitting and configuration). You can buy cheaper ones but this seems to tick all the boxes. With a 32gb micro sd, you get a lot of history.
