I thought I’d post this as it relates to car crime.

My next door neighbours have been away for two weeks and returned to find their home had been broken into and items taken. The police duly came out and ‘investigated‘ and issued a crime number etc. They did the usual knocking on all the surrounding doors and asked whether noises were heard or did anyone have CCTV. We all know the stats regarding crime convictions so the only upshot will be that the insurance will put things right for the couple and of course we all end up paying indirectly.

The reason for posting is that the low life’s came back the following night and stole their car which obviously wasn’t there the night of the burglary. The thieves had taken their second car key which had been kept in a jewellery box. What I’m perplexed about is why the police didn’t ask whether all their car keys were accounted for or is this just typical of the box ticking society we’ve become.

It’s bad enough enduring the aftermath of a break-in but to suffer a second time in days is appalling

They’ll have been asked if they can identify everything that’s missing, as Russ says they probably didn’t even think about the key as it was the jewellery in that box that was most apparent in their state of shock.
I had a long time friend who had exactly the same happen to them, they went on holiday and came back to a ran sacked house, a week later their car was stolen. The saddest part was she had terminal cancer, the holiday was going to be their last family holiday with their young son (just 7 years old now), the car was their pride and joy too. She unfortunately passed away just 6 months later

It’s very unfortunate and seems to be par for the course in the society we live in at the moment reducing burglary and car crime to a petty level is part of the erosion of societal behaviour we are being asked to agree with unfortunately

I can sympathise… the exact same thing happened to my brother well over 15 years ago… they found the car dumped a few days later but he got rid of that sharpish… it seems to be common place, judging by the stories but no measures in place from lessons learned….I agree, a checklist of questions to be asked would be nice to be have had by now, would be helpful to those in distress…

The world is fast becoming a horrible place to be.
I'm afraid that as times get harder things will get worse as more people are driven to crime or mental torment from not being able to survive financially.

Is there really so much crime that the police can't cope or is it the litigious society forcing more and more firewalling?

My nurse friend spends around 1/4 of her time at work with paperwork. Most of the rest is spent calming aggressive and irrational patients.

I wish I had the guts to live off grid!

It’s part of growing old unfortunately you see politics and society in real terms, good and bad, the biggest let down for me is the hopeless lot we have in the House of Commons and I mean all of them. There is an opportunity for our dear Nige to upend the system as he did in Brussels in two years time I hope he goes for it he has my vote

The UK law needs totally overhauling, especially when it comes to sentencing.
Magistrates and Crown Courts have their hands tied with inadequate sentencing and often fail to give the maximum penalty when possible.

Soft on crime? Most certainly.

If you want to look at deterrence… the data is crystal clear.

What deters <potential> criminals from committing crime, isn’t the severity of the sentence, but the perceived probability of getting caught.

So, for street crime the answer isn’t longer time in jail, but more coppers on the beat. For traffic crime, it’s more jam sarnies on the road. And so on.

Theresa May reduced the police force by 20,000 officers, & they have never recovered.
IT crime is endemic, & so is hate crime.
In my day if your panda was in the back yard during a shift the Supt wanted to know why. Now they never get out of the back yard.

Agreed, cutting the number of police is always a poor trade off.

Even worse however is “hate crime” legislation, specifically “hate speech” as it is almost by definition poorly worded, poorly phrased and trampled on the idea of a free society. It goes hand in hand with the (seemingly) general desire to take offence. I say seemingly as it’s likely around 3% of the population actually being so- but a very vocal 3%.

Well there is one thing for sure the crime deterrent industry is doing just fine. My neighbour is having CCTV fitted and I’m fitting a new floodlight and sensor in the back garden to cover the sliding patio doors and reinstated the house alarm with a new siren.

As a recent case shows. 2 morons mugged a very elderly bloke for his wallet. One of the morons had 350 previous convictions. The public deserves these characters being removed from the streets permanently, but will it happen? Not a chance.
