Might be someone nearer you, but this guy's Warwickshire: I've used Andy Overs at Ettington nr Wellesbourne (Stratford-ish) successfully. Search on here for him and you'll see someone else had a mixed response after using him.

All I'd say is be very explicit about what you want/don't want doing and it'll be no problem. He's come in bang on quote and on time for me and appears reasonable. Ex Main dealer mechanic, has all the diagnostic stuff, etc. Also with notice gave me a courtesy car - 307 HDi. Oh, and he drives a 210 estate, a 240 as I remember. Mine's a 210.

You could try Lanes of Lichfield. I live just south of Leicester and travelled over to them for a diagnostic and subsequent fitting of a new EIS. Their rates are half that of a MB dealer and the big plus is that you actually get to talk to the guys who are going to do the work.

They specialise in selling and maintaining Mercs, one of their sidelines is rebuilding E Types from the ground up. Very interesting outfit and excellent service.

Dont know if you have been to anyone, but if you are in Nuneaton then there is a garage GM services on Lythalls lane coventry who are ex merc guys. The guy who owns it is called Santok and is reasonable, also another guy who works from there called craig again ex merc. I use them all the time.
