I may have found the car I have been searching for but as normal its quite expensive, and close but not spot on to what I wanted

I REALLY WANTED A 2LTR 190E LOW MILEAGE.
I HAVE FOUND A 30.000 MILE GENUINE ONE OWNER
93 L REG. LE SPEC CAR. f.s.h but 1.8

The car is at a dealer and he wants £4.900 which by Parkers is £1200 more than book, however the car is mint.I am interested in your thoughts both on priceIs it worth it? and on the fact it is a 1.8 not 2ltr. Is there much performance difference, especially as it is auto? what about fuel consumption would I be correct to say about 27 per gallon. any help or advice you could give would be welcome.

INFORMATION REQUIRED PLEASE 190E

Afternoon,

May i congratulate you on choosing a 190!!

Once thing to bear in mind with the 190 and other mercs of that era is that the auto gearboxes are designed to pull away from a standing start in second gear under normal acceleration, unless the throttle is floored whereby it will kick down into 1st on pull off.

Because of this the pullaway tends to be fairly sluggish. It feels like this in my 2 litre, so i would imagine a 1.8 would be more so. I know on speaking to a fellow 1.8 190e owner on here (Sunil Sood), his wife felt this as well. Thats the only critisism i would have on the 190 to be honest, to give a general summary they are excellent cars, very solidly built with a feel that they will go on for ever. Very quiet at motorway speeds because, as you may discover if you ever take the carpet up or anything, the dound deadening is second to none. another good point is the fact that the 190 isnt ruled by electrics. Its a more traditional (or old fashioned!) type of car which the good DIY mechanic wont have too much trouble with. Mine has got 155K on it now, and it never fails to start 1st time, dosent smoke or anything. And in the time i have had it, it has never let me down at all. Being an L reg, yours will be the updated model to mine, i believe the centre consul is slightly different, and you have the better bumpers!

On the move, especially the acceleration from 60 upwards in 4th gear is pretty impressive for a 2.0 litre, so i cant imagine yours being that much different.

Fuel consumption, i had read somehwhere that when buying new, 190's were avaliable with a 50 or a 70 litre tank...whether this is true or not i dont know, but in any case mine is the smaller one, which with mixed driving will give you about 250-300 miles until the reserve light comes on. From when the light comes on, 33 quid or so gives you a full tank of unleaded, so they are cheap to run compared to larger mercs. Parts arent expensive in comparison to some of the larger models either, which is nice. Overall the 190 is an excellent car which i would highly recommend to anyone.

Hope i have been some help, and let me know if you need anyting else.

cheers

190E - Worst thing - Driver's seat (no lumbar support). Best thing - everything else. 2L manual avg 30-34 mpg rising to 40 on long journey. Matt's right - its not overly electronic making it easy to maintain but still relatively sophisticated. Mine's had a hard life and an uncertain past, a 1990 model with at least 164,000 miles.... and after 4 years and 64,000 miles, its *not* for sale!

I echo the comments above, our 2L auto does 29mpg locally and up to 35 on runs. The thing about a 1.8 is it has no advantage over a 2L. They are not more economical, and they are more sluggish, so I recon they have to be significantly cheaper than a 2L in the same condition. I suggest driving a decent 2L to feel the difference, then you decide if it matters to you.

my car is a 190e 1.8 litre auto-kreg -1993-the car is a bit sluggish as matt has stated above, but as mine is used mainly for town driving this does not matter much. However, the car is reliable, economical, solid,of quality build which will last forever, and with attention to detail;it is fun to drive, has a good turning circle, easy to park in tight spaces and relatively cheaper for spares than the bigger mercs. if i were mike, i would buy a 190e-2litre spec as this will be a better buy, hopefully less sluggish and better balance in terms of engine capacity /body size.

i would also suggest you look at parkers.co.uk ,under the car review section for more comparative information on the the 190e.
