Just purchased a C200 sport auto on the 'W'.
It has the usual 3 button IR remote key. When placing the key in the ignition, I cannot hear a click as is normal. When turning the key to position 2 all dashboard warning lights illuminate as normal. Then into starting position 3. Nothing. Starter motor doesn't crank and dash lights do not dim as would normally be expected. Also the steering lock remains on and strangeley the key does not hold in the ignition,it falls out.

Anybody come across this problem before or something similar?
All suggestions gratefully received.

I doubt it's the battery. The fob has 2. A normal one for the remote functions and an internal one, charged by induction from the keyhole that does the immobiliser functions. The replaceable one is ok as you can get in and if the other was duff, you wouldn't be able to turn it at all.
Does the other key work?
Sadly, I suspect the key slot module (can't remember it's proper name). Hope not though as it's pricey.

This means that the car is immobilised or the lock has not recognised the key.

There are two parts to this. the locking and the alarm and the DAS, if the locking cannot be done with the remote, I think that I would start there.

If I change my mind during the day, I will come back to it.

All sorted. The key and lock had some burring which wouldn't allow full insertion (no jokes please madam!) Didn't want to force it thru fear of further damage. Nail file smoothed the edges. No all OK.
Thanks to all who replied.:)
