Help - the No5 injector appears to have a crack around it just above the holding plate. It chuffs like a steamtrain when I got it to start. (it looked like oily waater spitting out at first). Sooo - could water in the fuel have caused this? I have not checked the fuel filter yet. This can't be a common fault. And is there an indie merc fixer recommended nearer to me than Stowmarket? I'm sticking to service items these days. Thanks, NB

Water in fuel? No. Or do you mean it was frozen and broken then? Still there should have been huge amount of water inside... Are sure its injector body, not coming from bottom hole? Nozzle holder will crack more often, I have heard only couple of cases where injector body itself is cracked. Plus couple of cases where top of the injector is broken so presurized fuel goes to injector housing. Get a refurbed injector from any diesel garage (just get part number from old injector).

Injector hold down bolt failing is quite common on ML370’s :( usually with a bodged helicoil

ok, annoyingly it's No5 so the coolant header tank & pipework has to come off. Glow plug connection on the top - remove the spring clip and lift off? Do they stick or should the injector come out after removing the holding plate? And a refurbed one should just "drop in and go", no calibration required?

Its should wiggle free with a small amount of persuasion, you will need a new seal and gentle seat re-cut , bosch inj are plug and play i believe

Or the injector could be held in by satan and a multitude of his slaves bodges, the seat will look like a bomb crater when you finally get to it after a mechanical caesarian.

Releasing the bolt will have been like watching Red Adair after the Gulf War.

Then to put it back in you will need to pack it off the back of the bonnet.

In the cold light of day access it too limited and my tool kit probably inadequate. I may have had a go at No1, but at armstrech to the oily end, Nah. It can wait til I can get it to autotech in chedgrave. Its on sorn anyway (she got a 12 week lockdown notice from the govt). I'll go brew some beer instead!
