Insurance renewal

I would never go for auto renewal on car house or any other insurance as they often just put it up, yes they should write first but you have to watch out.

My home Insurance went up £70 I phoned and got it back and cancelled anyfuture automatic renewals.. you cant trust them these days not to screw you

Also these days with all the NPRC number plate cameras that are being installed on A roads you may well find a large fine through your letter box from the DVLA as apprently they can now fine you if they pick up your number plate and its not insured or taxed

Interesting as we cant seem to control anything else........?

So surely it would be better to have the insurance auto-renew? Yes they might scam you and whack the price up (although my experience with LV is they don't do that) but surely better to, worst case, pay a bit more than get fined for no insurance (which in itself would cause your next premium to increase dramatically), or, worse, have an accident and find you're not covered?

I really don't know what the fear is - you get a renewal notice in exactly the same way as normal, so you can shop around and, if you like, refuse the auto-renewal. It's simply there as a safety net. If you forget to challange it, then surely you could have forgotten to renew?

It's great if you're perfect and won't forget. I'm pretty perfect, but I still forgot our house insurance one year and the first I remembered was they rang to ask why they'd lost my business.

Sorry to resurrect this one. Here's an update. Finally got my cert of insurance exactly 1 week after renewal BUT even now my car doesn't show as insured on the MID. A week ago I queried this with Hastings and was told that the insurer (Hastings are only a broker) was having technical issues updating the MID. I emailed them again yesterday for an update but no reply has been forthcoming yet. How can a technical issue prevent update of the MID for well over two weeks ? I'm getting to the point where I simply don't believe what I'm being told and with my Hastings insurance becoming due very soon on my other car, I don't feel inclined to renew with them. Does anyone know what the position is regarding the DVLA who, I understand, compare their "tax" database with the MID, sending warning letters / fines to owners who have cars taxed but which do not show as insured on the MID ? I presume (and hope) that when I am able to prove I am insured, any penalties will be cancelled. In my latest email to Hastings I suggested that they should hold me indmnified against any such penalty.

this would be a problem if you were trying to tax your car online.

Thanks Alex. Yes, I appreciate that and I do tend to tax online. However, it's more the DVLA fine / legal thing that bothers me presently,

If you have the certificate then your fine. If there are no fixed Number Plate camera detectors on your route your fine, if the police stop you, your fine as you have the document

You just MAY get a fine through the door from the DVLA if the static NP recognition pick you up as you drive past one but you are fine, send them a photostat and tell them to sod off and get the system fixed :)

Dont worry you will be fine as long as you have the documents, just ignore Hastings problem, if they get you good deals then stick with them

;)

Hastings are the worst insurance company I have ever been with. Not just my opinion, apparently came last in a Which survey for customer satisfaction too.
