Hi there

My insurance is up for renewal in a few weeks. I'm with a broker called PEART right now, who got me excellent insurance on my last car (TVR). The renewal figure is £617.50 with a £300 excess, 7 years NCB.

I have a SW Manchester postcode, and am 33 years old. Clean licence.

Are there any Mercedes-friendly insurers that you could recommend that might be able to offer me a better quote? I've tried the online confused.com thingy but that didn't even get close to this quote.

Why not try confused.com and see what they come up with, you will get quotes from quite a few companies.

I'd recommend Norwich Union direct and any of the Admiral Group (Admiral, Elephant etc)

Admiral quoted me <£300 for a W210 E320

That sounds high, I know that I am old, my Volvo group 17 is £325 with Norwich Union. I insured the SL with them on a new policy group 18 at £650 they wanted £625 one year later, I rang the MB insurance they did it for£515, joke is that N U underwrite it, I pay voluntary £400 on both, I think you must ring around, I would love to be 33 but I don't think I can afford to be.

I'm just done with renewing my insurance through confused.com.

I was with Budget (third party) and they were asking £525 even though I now have one years no claims bonus. I'm sure this was more than last year.

Checked confused.com and I'm now £241 fully comp!

My best quote online was www.morethan.com (Part of Royal & Sun Alliance Ins. Group).
The peculiar thing I found when searching was being given quite substantially differing quotes on a daily basis from the same companies for exactly the same cover! When I queried I was told this was due to a 'very volatile market which changed from day to day'!
My advice then would be to note the best quote for you at the outset, then try the same company for the same cover on several different dates, then choose the best again!

Confused.com couldn't come anywhere near my current broker's quote unless I took the protected NCB off - and I don't want to do that :)

Privilige couldn't beat it either.

Looks like I've got a pretty good quote as it is then, just a shame really because if I lived 50 yards over the other side of the river I'd have a Cheshire postcode not a Manchester one :( That and working in television really bumps up the cost.

Annoying thing is that my TVR insurance was £900 - you'd think that compared a car prone to single vehicle accidents that did 0-60 in under 5 seconds, with a soft top - insurance for an old Merc would be a lot cheaper :(

To add to the pot, I found first alternative the best out of the bunch but when I took that quote back to Frizell who I've been with since I bought my first Merc, they increased the excess to what I'd been quoted and that brought the premium lower than anyone else again.

Some of the firms above have quoted me stupid prices (MB insurance being one of the worst!) so the only conclusion I can draw is that two guys of the same age with identical cars living next door to each other could still get wildly different quotes from the same firm. I does seem that random!

I just spend a couple of hours doing the on-line trawl each year but so far, Frizell has always been the cheapest.

OH does the insurance, she reckonned had tough time tryingto find a competitive quote and in the end we got absolutely stuffed when switching to the ML.

Without a tracker, several firms would not quote or wanted an arm and a leg.

Turned out the best of the bunch was MB.... We've 'only' 9 months to go for renewal - so if anyone knows a better way would be very pleased to hear.

E240 estate 1998 costs me £297 pa with MB insurance. (55yrs old, 10k miles pa, £150 excess, 3 points and 6 or 7 years (can't remember) NCB. Under written by NU.

This includes RAC membership and allows you to have your car repaired by a MB repairer without having to argue about it. It also lets you have your windscreen replaced by a MB dealer and doesn't bind you to Autoglass or similar.

This was the best quote after a couple of hours shopping around.

I do my own MB insurance through a broker who got me underwritten with Norwich Union /Eagle Star and they were very competitive but this is is also for business cover.

My wife's car insurance was renewed last week and we went with Shiela's Wheels which is part of Halifax/eSure. We saved £160 over any other company and I'm on it as a named male driver. Courtesy cars all included, £150 excess, it is a good full policy and we both have a wee selection of points on our licenses.

I was with MB insurance for about 4 yrs until they changed underwriter and started quoting silly premiums. After trawling the online offerings I stayed with Admiral for a furtter 3 years until I changed vehicle. Admiral proved to be totally uncompetitive on my E320CDi and so I spent a few hours trawling the net for a better deal.

The result was, ins through M&S proved to be the most competitive, with full NCB, £250 excess, bonus guaranteed, full RAC cover, the premium worked out at £430. As I could suspend my existing RAC cover until I gave notice to recommence I thought this was a great deal. The real cost of the ins to me was £430 minus RAC cover, equals approx £330.

As some of the replies suggest sometimes you can't apply any logic to the quotes received, just keep trying until you get a good one. I will certainly test the water at MB ins again this year, the fact that any repairs will be carried out by their locally approved bodyshop does appeal.

Its a good job there is a lot of competition in the ins industry or else we would all be paying a small fortune

Shiela's Wheels smacks of sex discrimation. That used to be illegall until Tony Blair got into power.

I often wonder about the questions on the insurance forms asking about alarms and imobilisers, they never ask if the car is always locked. I, like many people, rarely lock my car at home or in the works car park. I usually lock it when at the retail park though as I'm very aware of the chances of theft these days.

Hi All

I insured my 2000 C230K through the MBOA last year and it cost me just GBP300.00. The MBOA are brokers and they selected Zurich for me. I asked Zurich to quote me separately but they couldn't beat the quote provided by the MBOA insurer.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the MBOA before now.

REGARDS Phil

I often hear of these £2,3,400 premiums but never got near one myself! The best I've managed was £640 g'teed no claims etc but with no RAC cover (got Mobilio at the moment anyway). I was paying this on the 2000 E240 so it cant be car age or model. Is it me? I'm 38, clean licence (admittedly more luck than judgement), live in Leeds which can't be worse than S/E uk surely. Ok the Mrs has 3 points but thats it. Car garaged, tracker etc.
Am I going to get a nice surprise when I turn 40?

You will realise that life is slipping by, and I am sure before the day is out someone will tell you

Funny thing is here on this site, one has no idea how old people are by their postings, or am lacking this virtue for the best part it seams that this is the average age.

Why not go onto an insurance site and try putting your details in and then start again and change your post code it might be the area you live in.
I stay in the G32 area but if I put in my details with a g72 post code I can save over £100 and the difference in the area’s is only 2 miles. But it is cheaper to pay the extra on my insurance than change the house. It doesn't get any cheaper when you turn 40 that is another Myth.

I have reduced my insurance costs year on year for the past 10 years.

Confused.Com is a good start but then phone the best 2/3 companies direct (contact details are given on confused.com) and haggle.

Used this a few times - as an example

Quote on new CLK was around £650 on Admiral via confused.com. Spoke to Admiral direct, pointed out that I had another car insured with them and the quote was reduced to £450!

Kwik Fit insurance are also good.

for a C280 and 500 SL, unlimited mileage both, business use both, both of us to drive, fully comp, clean licences, £150 excess, betwixt and between Manchester and Leeds. both of us over 40, althoght the wife won't thank me for disclosing that.Liverpool Victoria via Civil Sevice Motoring Association.
Most other insures won't even quote me the C for less than that.
