Interesting Air bag question - not the usual !!!

I have a 1998 E300TD W210 7 seat estate.

Sometime back I replaced the indicator stalk, removing the steering wheel as I did so.

I was extremely careful and managed to do all this without setting off the airbag, but the air bag light remained on.

I finally got round to sorting this and on removal of the steering wheel I have discovered that the wiring had been crushed when I put the steering wheel back on previously thus causing a problem. The wiring has been sorted but I am told that the air bag "controller" is kaput.

My interesting question is, will the the replacement control unit be car specific, i.e does it need to be a brand new unit programmed to the car, or can I pick up a used unit from a different car which can be reprogrammed to work in my car.

Many thanks,
Stewart

Normally Stuart if the key has been turned to 2 with any air bag fault, or air bag unplugged it does have to be re set on STAR, this is fact car cars newer than the 124, the 124 maybe included, I do not know for sure

I think a second hand unit can be used but will have to be coded.

I have never known one of these units to be coded, the air bag light will need resetting, but only as a matter of course and also to check the system is working, if you disconnect the battery whilst working on these items the system will never know they have been tampered with..

I'm based near Glasgow / Stirling.

Xtractorfan, the wiring to the airbag was damaged when I took off the steering wheel and has caused a fault with the control unit which means it has to be replaced. The mechanic said he thought the unit needed to be coded but wasn't sure if I could get away with using a used one as he thought they had to be programmed to the car and thus couldn't be used again.

Just had a look and all has to be coded, and there are 2 makes of air bags and control unit, and the makes cannot be mixed.

For the programming it says "enter the parameters and program new air bag" they are Temic or Bosch

Malcolm, thank you so much, would you be able to furnish me with a part no for those items, that I may investigate the pecuniary ramifications of said replacement.
gracias,

As Malc says, two different types. Do NOT fit wrong make. In modern cars, this can (& has) set off every airbag on the car. Other than that, just need to tell unit what type of car etc. This is only done via "Star" or similar diag equiptment.

(Hi Malc, long time no see............)

Hijack away good chap

I have often found little gems appear in hijacked threads as people begin to think outside the box.
