After filling up from a petrol station on Saturday night, my interior lights would not switch on with the main headlamp control (Lights on the heater controls and the Spedo/Tach dashboard).

Checked and changed the fuses and the lightbulbs but to no avail. Anyone got any idea?

Its the w123 230ce coupe.

Any help appreciated.

Hi,

Did you by any chance reset the mileage counter after you filled?
The adjustment for the brightness is done by turning the button that resets the mileage counter. Play with this, if you see the lights flicker, then the switch needs cleaning/replacing. If they dont flicker, could well still be the switch. Ive changed mine twice.

It cant be any bulbs really as the speedo has its own bulbs and everything else works on optic fibres.

There are three possible reasons for this.

First check that both headlights come on when switched on. The instrument and dash lights are on the same circuit as the left hand light (I think) as you sit in it. If one it hasn't come on then you have a blown fuse or the fuse holder could do with a clean. If both lights have come on then it is most likely the dimmer switch. They have a tendancy to corrode. The simplist remedy if you don't get a flicker by twisting the knob back and forth is to by-pass the dimmer switch, particularly if you like it bright.

The only other problem could be with the light switch itself but this is unlikely.
