W124 coupe, with perfectly functional sunroof drains, will randomly pour water from the trim at the top of both A pillars after its been raining.

I'm thinking that this is ingressing from the windscreen or the trims that run from front to back that can hold a roof box.

Inevitably this is causing condensation issues.

And it makes my knee wet.

Any thoughts ?

I've never had this problem. Are you sure the drains are working correctly?

The trim that runs from front to back for the roof box is easily removed so that you will be able to see what is going on in there.

Regarding the wet knees, I can't offer much advice other than have you shaved off any unnecceary body hair...you will find that you dry out a lot quicker.

gore-tex lined trizers would be helpful for the knee.

other than that, anything the above post says may help. you may be able to locate the exact leak point using a hose.

hmm, I cuppose I could try wearing a long mac (a suitably grubby one, of course). I never see the point in trying to remove all this hair anyway; its always back again when I wake up in the mornings.

I poured a litre of water into the trough with the sunroof open to simulate water ingress past the roof/panel seal in the summer and it came straight out of the wheelarch. Brought back disturbing memories of the head gasket symptoms.

I'll try the roof trim removal next and maybe give them a beating with the silicone stick.

It will be the brushes on either side of the sunroof which have perished. These brushes should keep out 96% of the water with the sunroof gutters and hoses managing the 5% which gets in.

Where does the extra 1% come from?

'The Brushes', do you mean the seal that runs round the sunroof hole?

...never been on a bus, but I've passed a few, not on the door side I hasten to add.

I'll have another look at my sunroof when I get a chance. This may be in a few months as there is a bad winter forecast.

You might find that the seal around the sunroof aperture is actually made in four different sections. The front and back are probably made of rubber as the action of closing the roof has a squeezing effect. The sides however have to take the abuse from a shear effect. If you look closly you may find that they more closely resemble a fabric or a fine brush. If there is any damage to it then more rain water then intended might get into the gutter in the sunroof cassette which can be overwhelmed.

There have been a couple postings of other cars where the tray has rusted through on cars the same age, repaired with glass fiber. the headlining is the problem.

Hi,

I 'fixed' two non Mercedes leaking roofs with polish. Although the drain channels were clear water was still ending up in the drivers lap.
Open the roof, give it a through clean then apply polish to the metal channel. The water then doesn't hang about causing trouble and goes straight down the drains.
