Hi, I've done a quick search but can't find any reports of a similar problem and wondered if anyone can help with this....

I have a 2001 SLK320 with air-con (not climate control), and in the last few weeks the fan has become intermittent. On a half hour journey the fan will randomly stop and then later re-start four or five times. There seems to be no pattern to when it stops/starts, its not bumps in the road, engine speed or me pressing any buttons.

I was wondering if it could it be something like low pressure in the air con coolant, but it happens even when the air con is off and just the heater is in used.

With winter on the way I'll need the fan to clear the windscreen when I start up. I was going to book it into a dealer to look at, but thought I'd check here first.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

Right, in case anyone else gets this....

I left the blower on full power for a week. Although the problem was intermittent it slowly got better, until now it seems to be OK.

I suspect dirty brushes on the motor were cleaned up by continuous operation.

I don't see it to be honest. Intermittent fans on mercs are normally down to faulty fan regulator units. I replaced mine (on my 2000 E class for similar reasons).

Hi

I have exactly the same problem on a 1996 (W202 petrol model) C180. Is the fan regulator unit easy to change or is that best left to the dealer?

Regards

I can only report what I find. Its been working for a week now without a problem, so whatever it was seems to have been resolved somehow.

We had a similar problem with our first SLK when we bought it. we had two problems, the housing was full of leaves and the contacts plugging the wiring loom into the fan were corroded, probably due to damp.

It is very easy to get at, just proceed as if you are changing the cabin fillter (above the passengers feet) and make sure that the contacts are clean and secure.

Tangential fans are funny things at the best of times, almost as their name implies, they can do funny things depending on the temperture, its only when you put a meter over the units can you be sure of the fault, and where it is, if the voltage is consistent from the regulator (allowing for vairible loading from the fan) and the fan varies in speed then it is the Fan/bearings/brushes or both. if the voltage is constant from the regulator, a headlamp bulb can be used as a load then it is OK,if the voltage is intermitent then the reg has dry joints or the control unit has dirty switches, (124-129-140 etc push button unit type,1990 to 1997 appr)
