Intermittent EML on the dash and high reading on the MOT emissions. 2003 SLK 200

I am probably asking the impossble, as without fault codes etc, you probably can't answer, but I am looking at buying a SLK to tinker with. It has Intermittent EML on the dash and high reading on the MOT emissions. 2003 SLK 200. Things that this could be? I know maybe an encyclopedia of faults.

The M271 engine can have a few “features” that can cause issues… wearing the cam gears and jumping a tooth or two… this can light the EML
