Hi My 2013 SL 350 with the M276 engine has a slight rattle on start up when warm but not every time. The noise is a bit like you get when starting up after an oil change before the oil gets into the hydraulic tappets etc The car has done 32k with full MB service history. I've recently changed the oil and filter with the correct spec oil and a Mann filter. The noise only lasts for about a second and as I say it doesn't do it every time and not from cold. Any ideas anyone.

Do you have recording of it?

Fine from cold. No recording. I don't know if I should buy some Mobil oil or the like and change it again. I used 229.3 as advised by a ex MB mechanic. The make of oil I used is what I have used before in a Jag many times with no ill effects. But if I need to change it again I will. I don't want to damage the engine.

Understand.doubt oil the issue .open up yr oil filter see if anything trapped in the pleats if the paper.if not doubt you have a big issue .maybe oil is leaking past tensioner o ring .frankly I would expect that to be more noticeable at cold start tho difficult to pinpoint from here..

Possibly cam adjusters draining whilst switched off. There are some anti-drain valves for some of these engines. There was a technical bulletin somewhere

Thanks for the replies. I think Uncle Benz is on the right track, I wonder if there is a Molyslip kind of product that I could use. I was watching a video on Youtube last week and Lucas now do a thin additive for modern engines. Having said that I'm not to worried about it as it is a very light noise and as I have said it only lasts for about a second or so. My previous car a V6 Jaguar did the same kind of noise from cold and it's still running fine.

229.3 is an ancient poor performing oil spec .

Just bought 7 Ltrs of genuine MB 5W40 229.5 off ebay for £29 31 using a £10.00 voucher. So now I know I've got the right oil at a good price.

This is an old post, I know.

I have the same or similar intermittent noise, usually when the car is warm. From inside the car it appears to be coming from the rear of left bank. Its lasts for 1-2 secs maximum which makes me think its oil pressure related.

I was wondering if the fault described in previous posts manifested itself, or stopped.

Any feed back would be appreciated.

I now use Shell helix ultra engine oil and the noise has stopped. It has an additive called tackifiers' which is basically an adhesive. It's probably the best oil on the market, although not cheap. Ferrari use it in there V12 engines to alleviate rattle on start up.
Google it you'll be amazed.

Thank you for your prompt response, much appreciated.
What was the weight of the oil ? Was it 5W30 fully synthetic?
Thanks again
John
