I have a strange problem on my July 2000, W202 C220 CDi Est. The outside air temp display often reads something crazy like -C0.E at start up, and then reads normally after about 30 minutes running, and stays good for the rest of the day.

The sensor in the front bumper is OK, as a new one made no difference.

If the display is good, and you take the sensor off, the display reads minus 38.0 C.

If the display is crazy, and you take the sensor off, nothing changes.

Any ideas ?

Some new evidence tonight. Half of the display corrected itself after about 30 minutes to read +7.L degrees C. The outside temperature (digital thermometer out of the window) confirmed +7.0 degrees C so it's probably the LCD display unit, as no electrical fault could generate half a faulty signal, unless of course, you know better !

So, if I'm going to avoid a bill of £150 +VAT to fit the new part, my question is...is the LCD display unit available as a separate part, and do I need a Haynes manual to help me get the instrument panel out ?

Hi

There is not much you can do. If the LCD requires replacment. To replace it the old one needs to be in situ. The old data removed via the Star Machine & recoded into the new unit.

Sorry its a trip to the dealers or your local specialists if they have the equipment.

Is there any difference between the pre facelift cars and the face lift ones? as mine didn't need any trip to the dealers to get it to work.

Is the milometer linked in some way to the temperture readout ? My milometer display is perfect, its only the temp. which is faulty.
