Hi Everyone, I have a 1991 W124 230TE, I am looking for some pointers:

Intermittently, when idling, the engine will cut out when/ If I don't keep the revs about the 1500 mark. Sometimes when driving for example turning a corner I take my foot off the accelerator and it konks out !

It is becoming a problem when stopped at lights as it invariably cuts out. This happens when hot and cold ... any ideas where I start to solve the problem?

The chap I bought it from said he has just had the idle valve cleaned... could this point to a bigger problem ?

Clean all the leads wires and contacts in the HT circuit.

Change the plugs.

Clean the carb.(if it has one!)

The OVP is behind the battery. If there's plastic cover behind the battery (there should be) remove it and you'll see the OVP on the right hand side

When you replace the cover the upper edge should be tucked under the trim on the drain under the front edge of the windscreen

Stircrazy: The early carburettor W124s didn't have an E in the name. So a 200T would have a carb and a 200TE was injected. I've never seen a 230 with a carburettor but have no doubt there is one somewhere!

Just a thought, if the fuse in the OVP has blown why is the fault intermittent rather than constant?

Two firms made these things, one in Hungary, the other Ireland, one of them gets badly dry jointed and gives intermitent idle. It is the number one reason.

The other reason that I bring this part up is that you must be sure that the ECU, etc are getting the full 12 volts, its called starting with basics and must be done, every thing that comes into me, the first thing=== Are the power supplies OK and all voltages normall and correct.

Hi there, Did all that at the weekend, and so far so good, I haven't had it cut out on me at all (touch woods, fingers crossed and all that).

Thanks for the advice
