I'm presuming VB wants us to put all new thread relating to test sub-division in this section. So here a start.
  • Does anyone know how to replace IR sensor in door handle?
  • Is removing door trim on r129 similar to that of w124?
  • Is there any precautions needed with side airbag and sensor?
Answers to one or all questions much appreciated

There are precautions to be taken with side airbags in doors if you are removing door cards/trims......!! Not sure how it works but I did ask dealer sometime back about it because I wanted to change the door speakers.

I will take the second question on for the new models as they are very different to the older 129, I have had my doors to bits to sort out some sound deadening I also have a link to the method for opening the older version of the doors :D

Morning :)
this is the best set of instructions that I have found to date

THIS LINK IS FOR THE OLD SKOOL VERSION OF THE DOOR PANEL !!!!!

http://www.astro-nut.com/mb-door.html

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

THESE INSTUCTRUCTIONS ARE FOR 99 > 02 ( Pictures on the above link might have some use as some bits are the same )

I am going to do a proper howto for the 99 > 02 models when I get the cash to change my speakers :)

But for now here are the basics

MB have reduced the work invovled conciderably

1) pop the triangular piece of trim by the wing mirror at the front of the door off. (it pops out and up)

2) Remove the silver plate on the edge of the door (3 screws)

3) There is a little rubber plate round the lock mechanism (remove this also 1 screw)

4) The little SRS badge pops out (not off) and you can remove one big cross headed screw

5) Open the pouch and you will see a square plastic cover towards the back of the pouch (pop it off) and remove 1 large cross headed screw

5) At the front of the pouch you will see the second cover (pop that one off and remove a large cross headed screw. )

Now use a flat object to slip between the door and panel and pop the plastic rivets...

The door then slides up and away...

The door remains connected to the panel via the lock mechanism (glorified bike break and the electrics for the seat adjustments :) The electrics jsut pops off.

To release the door handle you need to twist the surround (orange in my car)
to get more play. you cna then slot it out of its surrounds....

:)

I guess I can answer three as well :D

The airbag is attached to the door rather than the card and is about the size of a tin of tobacco. (bit bigger but not much)

As for precautions I would leave it alone and resist the urge to prod it about with a screw driver its probably safe but I would not want to buy a new one ;)

The Door trim to go with the side bag is sealed along the middle of the leather trim above the storage box.

do not apply pressure to this while its away from the door or you could burst the seams and ruin the trim :(

Pretty much the same as w124, but I noted the extra screws.

Thanks Peter, No intention of going near airbag container.

PS: Didn't even know there was a tiny stowage compartment in the door till you pointed it out. Just goes to show.
