Just wanted to know if the autobox from an 1986 W124 300 Diesel will fit the later W124 Auto multi-valve E300 or vice versa? If there is are differences, what are they??
AFAIK there were no 5-speed auto W124 diesels. The 5-speed auto was an option from 1992 only on the six-cylinder cars. I don't think it was standard fit on the W124 at any time
The late multivalve diesel (WDB1241912Fxxxyyy) box is a 722.435 and the box for an early 250D (WDB1241852Fxxxyyy) is 722.414. There is obviously a difference but I can't say what it is. Some W210s used a 722.436 and that's suitable as ell. I'm told later W210s went to an electronic speedo drive but that the old mecahnical drive can be fitted in place of the electronic sender
Physically, I would expect them all to be interchangeable. But there's quite a big difference between the early and late gearboxes. Early ones are lazier and later ones step off from rest better and hold on to gears longer - or that's how it always seems to me
Multivalves use a pneumatic signal to flare shifts under full throttle. I don't think that system's present on the early cars
