I have a w166 with corrupted SatNav (and no Original Sat Nav DVD).
Am I correct thinking that the way to fix this issue is:
1) to connect to the Head unit and erase the corrupted SatNav files,
2) obtain original Sat Nav DVD (2012) and a later Sat Nav DVD,
3) Update the Sat Nav.

I guess the fist step of erasing the corrupted satnav files is the trickiest bit?
I imagine this can't be done without special sofware?
If someone could advise on a garage or mobile specialist who could do this, I would be very greatful.
Cheers

If it's possible (or been done) Comand on Line, in Lightwater just off the M3 will have either done it or know of it.
In theory, it's a hard drive so wiping should be simple or possible....

But little about Comand is ever simple.

I don't rate your chances, but look them up and good luck!

Can you switch it on and do a restore to factory, which deleted everything.

Is this a new to unit and where did it come from, was it working before, what happened to the DVD.

Hey, thanks for your replies.
I will definitely contact commnand_online.
(I guess their price will be higher that a new modern Android system installation, so will have to decide what I'd like more re-store command or swap to an Android).

This is totally my fault.
It had a fully functional 2012 SatNav, which I tried to update to a newer version. The update failed in the middle of the process.
How do I re-store to factory? (Bought a car without an original DVD)

the mapping update shouldn't take down the whole system - unless doing something rather strange
from info I see above, sounds more like a hardware issue drove the software in a tail spin

what exact features have you got working not and what was going on when it went strange ?

if loading hooky maps I doubt that will kill the whole lot

My first try would be to buy an original maps disk and hope that overwrites the corrupt data on the HD.

If you scroll through settings you can do a factors reset. I assume the rest is working just not the maps. What error messages are you seeing.

Everything works fine apart from Sat Nav.
The error message says "Please insert navigation update DVD No. 1"
Checked the eBay, so far could not find Comand NTG4.5 2012 Sat Nav DVD. Seems to be a relic today

Will keep looking and give Comand Online a call, just to know what my options are.

Cheers

In your original post it's NTG4, now you mention NTG4.5 - different animals! NTG4 can be updated just with a set of DVD's, but using pirate DVD's instead of genuine has been known to "brick" the Comand system with no way back other than complete unit replacment! NTG4.5 requires not only the DVD set but also a PIN that is specific to your vehicl's VIN and is obtained from the MB mainframe in germany, either by an MB main dealer of an indie with acess to that - like comand.co.uk.

You should start by emailing your vehicle VIN to comandonline.co.uk so they can look up the build sheet for your car They're located a couple of miles from J3 M3 in Lightwater Surrey, have forgotten more about MB ICE systems than any MB dealer knows, will know from your description what is needed to fix the Comand and will possibly be able to supply (and fit). They also supply and fit quality after market units by the likes of Pioneer, but will not touch Chinese cheapo units.

I'll tag @Alfie to give him a heads up!

I mean buy the newest disk - original. not 2012.

And do not bother with ebay junk. using fake disks (many on ebay) is known to cause problems.

its sounds like it didn't like the data or the methods used,

car manu went a bit crazy between 2007 and 2015 and decided there was a massive revenue steam selling €300 maps on every car, every year. So they had to stop fakes loading and in came various methods to stop piracy. It seems you didn't follow the right method.

The endeavour to get us buying new maps all the time was not helped by most governments changing tack, They decided we all need to be locked up and must not be allowed to travel anymore - so road building stopped (aside from camera controlled interfaces where they try to spot even the most subversive slaves who choose to pull the battery from their tracking devices - AKA phones). So with a ridiculous price and few changes, its a 3 to 4 year gap before later maps are really needed. Over two iterations of that gap, the world moved again, and to combat both fake number plates and unplugged phone batteries, we have internal always on connections to their google masters for the people that are allowed outside.
