I bought my w210 4 months ago, from a wee man out in the sticks over here in northern ireland, he had the car from new and treated it like a baby, up to now i have had no issuses with it and it does on average 120 miles a day, one thing that stuck in mind when i was looking round it that saturday morning was a wee semtnce he said to me "take it up the road, floor it and i will bet you a tenner you will never want to drive any other type of car" and those words have proved to be true in my case, i had previously owned fords, citorens, nissans all diesils as i am a taxi driver, i just cant see me buying anything else when the time comes to change, was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this after they bought there first merc

My Dad bought his first in 1980 and aside from a sticky patch a few years ago, has always had a merc on his driveway since. I drove his when I passed my test in '84 and bought my first in '98. Now on my 3rd.
Yes, I believe, certainly a few years ago, MB had a pretty solid customer loyalty. Not so sure it's as true these days with the greater competition and wider range, but there is something about the way a merc feels and if you like that, you're normally hooked for life.
That said, they've been playing around with the recipe for a while and they have diluted it to some extent. The A,B classes IMHO are little different in feel to the Audi my wife had. Not that this is a critisism, the Audi was a very solid car, but it wasn't a "merc". My 211 has less "Merc" feel than the 210 which in turn had less than the 124. Step into a 202 and you knew it was a merc as soon as the door shut. As brilliant as it is, I'm not so sure thats true on a 204. I remember getting out of a 330i BMW I'd test driven, stepping back into my 5 year old 4 cylinder 202 and thinking, I should be itching to do a deal...but I wasn't. Whether that will happen with newer owners remains to be seen.

I have been driving now for almost exactly 40 years and this is the first time I have ever felt almost 100% compelled (when the time comes) to replace my existing car with another of the same make. And in that 40 years I have driven a real variety of makes and models.
My W203 is real joy to own and drive. It gives me the same level of enjoyment as my old Lotus Elan did - but without the constant niggles and under bonnet fiddling. Its only the second car I have owned that I would enjoy driving the length of Britain in non-stop. The other one was a 1970 Triumph 2000 estate. And funnily enought THAT was the only other automatic as well. Coincidence? I dont know. All I do know is, I would not want to go back to a manual now.
The only other make that I would like to try before I get tooooo old is a Porsche. Can you buy an auto Boxster?

I've gone from none to four

in 6 years. That has to say something about them and me, although 2 of them are the wife's.
I really wouldn't be happy putting the mem and the kids in anything less substantial. Even the SL with it's late 60's/early 70's technology is still way better than a lot of the modern stuff on the road.
So if it weren't a Merc, it would probably be a big Beemer or a big Volvo or a big Audi. I've gone all middle-aged and middle -class now.

yes and no I bought an S320cdi as it was in my price range and looked the part , drove well too and i thot well diesel is the way to go.. BUT my '97 BMW 535i was the best car I ever owned, smooth, fast, reliable, and it ran on rails tho that had a lot to do with the Michelin pilots, great combination, the merc has its moments , but the beamer was always on song, always a joy to drive and I have to say was frugal as well..

Hi

"You will never have another merc like ur first!"

They stopped making real Mercs when they stopped putting BIG steering wheels on them.

There is a lot of truth in the above, though I only had it for days with the thin white large steering wheel, a lovely 250 CE from the mid 60's

Hi

"You will never have another merc like ur first!"

Very very true. I had the opportunty to buy back my 202 recently. If only I'd had a 3 car garage, it would be sitting there now. (Actually more likely my 211 would be sitting there and the 202 would be in the office car park!)

My SLK 230k is my first MB and despite a few problems (I am used to Japanese cars so breakdowns are new to me.........) I will buy a new shape SLK 350 when replacement time comes early 2008.

It's a nice, solid car that looks good and goes well; it has a great image and I love that roof. Peugeot may lay claim to inventing the metal folding roof back in the 1940s but give me the SLK over any hideous French tin foil excuse for a car, any day!!!
