Hi all,

I have a 1998 230 slk with 98000 k on the clock and in very good condition with a good independant service history. I have been offered to swap with a 1991 320 sl in gunmetal grey in good condition with 95 k on the clock. The value is pretty similar as far as i can see but there is the worry of going a lot older, which one will depreciate quicker. If anyone has any comments out there they would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Rosco

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Newer cars depreciate faster than older cars.

Personally I'd say it depends what the condition of both cars is, and the relative specs.

Also ask yourself why the 'seller' wants rid.

1991 SL with that mileage, £6k tops but it would have to be mint. Keep the SLK, compare prices there dont seem to be many cheap SLK's around have a look on pistonheads.com, even with your mileage the SLk still got be worth £7-8-9 surely.

SLK will still lose some money in the next few years, where as the SL at the price should stay at that level, lots of SL's around its a buyers market.
I have a 1995 SL500 I'd £11k for quick sale.

a 9 year old SLK will be pretty trouble free for a while yet. Sadly, however well built, any 16 year old car is going to start having some age related problems, be they corrosion, things getting brittle or just general wear. After all, 98k or not, it's had 10 years more door opening etc.
Depreciation wise, yes in 20 years, the SL will be worth more but as far as depreciation goes, both have suffered the majority and the value from here on will have more to do with condition than age.

I would be very wary of the roof on any 16 year old convertible - these are by far the first thing to go wrong on any car and on an SL it's gonna cost you.

I would have thought that unless you can do a lot of the work yourself, the running and servicing costs for an SL would be significantly more than an SLK - can you afford the potential high cost of repairs? :(
