Popped in to the Reading MB on saturday to enquire about a new fuel filter for the racing bus. £69 +VAT didnt seem too over the top for a merc but then came the surprise....

Im infomed that the manufacturer of the filter has been changed (cant say i care what label it has on it) and the new design doesnt fit the old plumbing!

What the hell?!?! Who in gods name signed up to that?!?!!! So now if i want a new filter the whole system has to be replumbed to fit it!

You cannot be telling me that a company like Mercedes have seriously done this!

Anywho, emotions back in the box.

Is this correct or was the nice man trying to use ym wallet to solve all of MB's credit crunch worries?

Don't know if this is true or not, but what does he mean by 'replumbing'?
I've seen small mod kits for things from time to time. Normally so an updated component can be used, but its usually a small tweak, such as a change of connector. What is he suggesting needs changing?

Have you tried euromerc or eurocarparts? Don't think the fuel filter will invalidate a warranty, will it?

Replumbing means changing all of the fuel lines. A complete new set which have the adaptors for the new filter.

Not sure about the automotive industry, but in telecoms we are seeing lots of parts becoming unavailable as suppliers go out of business, or try to cut low volume components as they don't make money on them.

I guess that Automotive is in pretty bad shape at the moment, and the old filter may not be available any more. However, there may be some still around in the supply chain, so look around at other suppliers
