Hi,

A few weeks ago the coolant light came on in my car and i thought that topping it up with water would be ok until i got some coolant.

Unfortunately tonight the light came on and a few hours later a water sound (boiling water i'm sure) sound came from under the bonnet and steam coming out of a hose that has broken.

It still starts but i'm wondering whether (a) if it has done more damage elsewhere

(b) if not, i could risk nursing it back to my house (5 miles) without damaging it more

(c) if repairable, could i do it myself - how?

Many thanks in advance

All you can do is to fix the hose and top up again, by leaving the cap off it will not force the water out, and is OK to get the car home

You must check the oil dip stick to see if the are any water bubbles on it, and check inside the oil filler cap for the same. if there is water in it you should not drive it

i can do but not until tomorrow as my car is in a car park 5 miles away unfortunately!

But it is a split of 5 cm i'd say so pretty big. Also if i need to replace this what do i need to ask for? It is on a mercedes 190e.

Thanks for your help

Just take it off and go to MB and tell them where you took it from

On a cold night you could try and tape up,do leave the cap off to stop the pressure and drive home, carry some spare water with you

Hi boston

What age is your car? Since one hose has obviously failed and must be replaced, it would be adviseable to check the other coolant hoses because they will most likely be of a similar age. Don't rely upon tape for a permanent fix.
