Is my engine overheating?

Hi everyone, just bought a clk 320 X reg. Have noticed that the temp guage often rises above 80 degrees (halway) almost 90 ish. Is this normal? I used to own a BMW 3 series and the temp always stayed at halfway. There is enough coolant in the tank and I can't see any leaks.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I would imagine that its normal, even above 100 deg in traffic before the fan cuts in to drop it back down to 80ish. Worth a second opinion though.
Regards
Mike

Thanks Mike,

Just read the thread / poll in the technical info forum regarding operating temp. Looks like the temp is supposed to fluctuate. Will keep an eye on it.

We seem to be getting a load of threads on engines getting hot, I even started one somewhere...this is the tail end of winter...what's it going to be like in the middle of Summer?

I'll be putting in the water wetter soon to see if this helps. The other method is to avoid traffic jams.

BMW teperature gauges are driven by the Engine management unit and tend to stay right in the middle because they do not indicate actual temperature but show deviations from what the ECU considers "Normal".

Mercedes temp guages show actual temperature and so as long as it does not go in the red (120) zone, that is "normal".
