I heard from someone that the S320 Limo (1995) Mercedes is bullet proof, i know the car has double galzed windows but is the car actually bullet proof?
Some of them were, and were a very expensive option done mainly for oil rich arabs and the like, added over a ton to the weight. There are also companies who retro fit armour plating etc.
I think what most people mean by 'bullet proof' is that it's quite reliable. Real bullet proof mercs will tend to be S500s to cope with the extra weight of the armour plating, but even then there is a lot of variation in the protection. Actually a proper bullet proof S class won't be double glazed as they will need the width for thicker glass.
You'll know by the weight of the doors when you open them. It should also show on the build card if you know your VIN - Special Vehicle codes were prefixed with Z - e.g:
Z04 from 15.04.1997 B4-REINFORCEMENT ON SPECIAL PROTECTION VERSION
The normal LWB S class was just that - a longer version with slightly different standard equipment.
The 600 was one of the most popular bullet proof cars, it also had double glazed windows and electric door closers. But as JB says no double glazing and bullet proof.
My good friend bought one new for £100k and sold back to MB later in the same year for £40k with 8k miles. I drove it, it handled like a mini
malcolm
Long wheel base is the Limo isnt it? This is the first Merc i have driven, because im in the UK, our roads are small and so ive always driven smaller cars (206, Audi A3)...But i wanted something that looked like a tank and so got the S320 Limo, its only done 70K miles and the engine is smooth, the ride is unbelievable, i go over bumps and ramps and i can hardly feel it...its the most amazing car i have every driven.
The reason im asking if its bullet proof is because someone mentioned it, the doors are very heavy and its double glazed...really doesnt make a difference for me anyway because no1 here has a gun, but it would be nice if it was.
I love everything about the car, its just that filling up the car with petrol is a bitch.
