Should there be a cover plate on the underside of my engine compartment? Model is a E320 estate 1994. My brother-in-law has a full cover plate on the underside of his 300E TD 1993 model.
Any help appreciated.

No, think it should have one although not as big as the diesel cover which covers everything including most of the gearbox. Can you see the brackets next to your anti roll bar brackets. Workshops are well known for forgetting to refit them, also they have a habit of falling off, only MB I can think of that came without one was the 190E 1.8.

like the other guy has stated, I believe it is optional, I do have a cover, and my brother says it is optional, he knows quite a bit about this stuff.

They all normally have a plastic sh1t-shield under the engine which links with another under the gearbox

They do tend to go missing

All merc diesels have the covers, mostly with added sound proofing, there are some to the side of the under shield to close off all the gaps that diesel rattle might escape from.
This is to conform with emmited sound levels regulations.

Their tendency to keep the engine bay clean is a convinent bonus.

Dont drive a 124 with only the rear section in place or the wind will pull it down till it rubs on the road and makes a fear inducing noise as you get up to 60MPH.
