Hi, grateful for some buying advice if anybody can help me out....

W202 C200 Sport Auto registered in Jan 1998, with 64k miles on the clock. For sale at £5695 - is this a good deal do you think?

Seems to be in good order, though it has an AMG badge on the boot. Would there have been an "AMG option" as it were, offered by Mercedes when the car was bought new or is it more likely that someone simply stuck the badge on as an afterthought?

I don't know what an AMG option might entail, but the alloys (17 inch) look bigger than the usual and the front skirt looks a tad sportier. Of course these might just be features of the Sport model, I'm not sure. Anybody out there got a C200 Sport of that sort of age, or can anyone enlighten me as to what AMG means on the back of a car?

Oh and while I'm at it, any figures available for fuel consumption?

Sorry for all the no doubt obvious questions but any help would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Nick.

C200 sport

Looks a little pricey to me. The C200 is not the best of the sport models. For that money I would be tempted by a C240 sport on a S plate with full history - they do exist. You may even get one for £4k - £4.5k. Mileage is not really an issue as long as it is not galactic and unwarranted. Also the later model should have more safety kit (passenger airbag) and the subtle facelift.

I bought a C200 Esprit with AMG alloys on a '97 R in navy blue with 125k and FSH for £2,750 last March. The 2 litre 16v engine is punchy enough but a little rough. Having tried the C240, the V6 engine is smoother but not that much more powerful.

It all depends upon what running costs, insurance, etc you have budgeted upon. My choice would be the C240 though.

Playing devils advocate, how about a C34 / C43 from £6k (if you can live with the slightly eclectic interior)
