I have been offered an SLK 200, manual right hand drive. 37k on the clock, great condition all the extras. The cost is £11,750. This seems a good price but the car was imported from germany with delivery mileage and then registered in the uk. I think the only difference is the stereo, which is a sony one rather than the Audio 10 (?) My questions are :

Are there any other differences with the 'grey' imports? and
Are the 2nd hand prices adversley affected as a result?
Is this a good price for the car?

Never bought a merc before, but having driven it was very impressed. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Joel.

A car that age and with that mileage is worth about £13500 (Dealer) and £12250 (Private). That's for a UK supplied RHD vehicule. You are paying £500 bellow that. Not sure it's such a good deal.
"All the Extras" make the car more apealling on the secong hand market, but do not increase the value significantly. The options I would most find essential are: Leather, Heated seats and Climate control (Air-Con).
The heated seats are a must on cold but sunny days where you may want the roof down but do not want to freeze your pants off in the mean time.
Check the catalytic convertor as they are prone to fall off on vehicules that age. £1500 replacment from MB
Also check the electric roof. The roof should open or close in one smooth operation. No shuddering or hesitations. This fault appears mostly on cars that have not used the folding roof frequently.

Foreign SLK

We have just bought a beautiful foreign SLK 230K from a garage near London.

Standard right hand drive, but odomter in KM (a bit of a pain but apparently adaptors and replacement dials are available)

I would really recommend them! We are lucky as ours is from Cyprus so it's a standard right hand drive.

The stereo is only a Pony Sony but does kick out some sound, so it does me.

No heated seats I'm afraid which is disappointing but can't complain at paying £7495 for an R plated 1997 car that has only done 52000 MILES and throws me back in my seat like a rocket.

BUY IT! LOVE IT! SLK IT!

There's a guy offering a Glass's guide price on another thread - you could PM him. I looked on the thread and there was a free link to Glass's Guide and I keyed in the details of my 2001X SLK320 V6 manual with 30k miles big alloys, leather, etc (not imported) and it gave me £11650 in top condition in P/X. The price you've been quoted is very high. I also noticed on Glass's Guide that a manual (relative to an auto) loses nearly all the original cost of the extra (i.e. the auto version of my 320 is worth £1200 more, when the cost of the extra was £1500 new). People don't like Merc manuals so that's a bargaining tool.

The Sony head unit was a dealer fitted option when new. It's not related to it being an import. Provided that the car is full UK spec it doesn't really matter much that's it's an import, but make sure that it's got all the extras that UK buyers demand. It must have a leather interior and metallic paint for a start. A/C and cruise should be standard. If it hasn't got any of these, walk away. 17" alloys are also desirable - anything less looks weedy nowadays
