Well ... I picked up my first MB today ... E220CDi Auto Elegance

brand spankin' new .. my first new car that I have paid for too (I have had many company cars)

.. the dweebs (dealers) have on gone and managed to lose one of the keys!
Between getting it delivered and giving it to me ... "Hells Teeth!" as a friend of mine would say ...

I don't know what sh1t they paint on the tyres but it looks like engine oil and I have little spots of it up the bodywork ... day 1 and I have to get the sponge out.

Anyhoo ... drives alright ... pretty pokey for a diesel /auto
The cruise control is a bit confusing as it has cruise and speedtronic on the same stalk and I haven't figure out WTF speedtronic is for yet ... waiting for that lightbulb moment

Had a neighbour pee on my bonfire tho' ...
"nice car ... I've just been out and bought one today"
"Oh, what have you got?"
"Porsche 997"

<thinks> "Bugger ... boohoo ... wahhhhaaahhhh"

Congrats on your choice, speedtronic is the limter that you can set to the desired max speed when it is depressed and the red light is on, fine for 30 40 zones, if you used it at 70, though it still works you woulds have to go to kick down to get out of trouble and over ride it.

Congrats on the new car! You'll get used to the cruise control/speedtronic, though I must confess in my years of MB ownership, I don't think I've used the speedtronic............

Love the cruise control though!

Make sure you're not driving it like an old woman, or the car will grow into something as quick as a 1.1 diesel Fiesta.

You don't want to be ragging it, but keep it below 3000rpm until warm, and ensure you use the full range of the engine. You want those piston rings to bed in nicely, and being gentle with it won't help you to do that.

Don't be afraid of booting it every so often :)

Agreed,
As for the Speedtronic it works in reverse to the cruise control. I.E with Cruise once you set it you will not drop below a set speed yet you can by using your right foot accelerate above the set speed. With the Speedtronic limiter you set the maximum speed and unless you press the accelerator right down you will not go above the set speed. I find it very useful for areas where the traffic is not clear enough to use cruise but there are too many civil servants around to not keep the car in check.

I just wanted to say:

I'm green with envy

And I bet it's fab. I remember having brand new motors (company ones, mind) and what a joy it was........

In my growing amount of years on this planet, The only new vechile that I have ever owned was a VW transporter in 1960, That got through 2 engines 3 gearboxes and a clutch in the first 6 months. The amount of business that I lost during that time it was off the road has confined me to second hand ones ever since.:( :( :(

err a 2nd hand (and not very 2nd hand) SL500 Malcolm !
hardly slumming it!
As I've said many times, a new car is a used car once you had it for a couple of weeks and a used car is a new car only a whole lot cheaper. At the end of the day I can always have a nicer used car than the new one. After all, I'm sure I could have had a nice new poverty spec E200k when I bought mine, but it would now be a used 25k poverty spec E200k...and I'd be hankering after something faster with more toys - which is exactly what I've got.
If I could afford a new E320 specced to the gills, I'd be considering a used E55 - there is always something better....

For sheer common sense I have never seen a better answer on any forum, than the ones put up by Jberks in these matters, and we all really know that the above is true and is the case, though the is the odd one out there happy to have no extras.

In my case I could have bought a ex demo basic for a little more than I paid for the car, but I would have always wanted the other things so that there is more to go wrong  . I have had it 7 months now and been 3k miles already, and now reading 20k. I am lucky as this is not my every day car, though I did a service call out this week in it.

I know what you are saying ... BUT

with the new one there was a "deal" on ...

I gave them my 3.5 year old Vectra (that I owned outright - bought from a car supermarket 3 years ago)

They gave me a shiny new E Class ... I just have to give them £330 each month.... at the end of 3 years I give it back to them ...
The APR for the finance was 4.3% - pretty good I thought
It certainly beats taking >£25k out of savings or taking out a personal loan for it.

So for a reasonable monthly outlay I get to use up the warranty period of a spanky new motor

As for toys - with 2nd hand you have to "make do" with someone else's choice ... new, it is you that chooses.

I didn't go overboard with extra toys myself but an Elegance/Auto is reasonable spec'd anyway.
I did get a kind of "You must have Parktronic ...everyone has Parktronic"
er ..no ... £700 keep it

come 3 years I will be searching for another deal:D

Oops .. there's an echo in here ...

You did your homework and you have bought what you wanted, you know that you can afford it, and that is perfect for you. Those on the forum know that the extras mean more to me than the car as a whole, so I have everyone even though I admit that I will never use half of them, linguatronic being one of them.

Absolutely - there is no right and wrong in this - one man's poison and all that!
You're right about the cost of the extras - absolutley mad.
But then I like the extras ..:(
It is true you end up with someone elses spec, but i'f I'd bought new, just like you did, I'd have said no to parktronic and probably turned down the memory seats at £650 too (I can adjust my own seat and it's mainly me that drives it in any case). I'd almost certainly not have forked out £1200 for leather. After all I've always been very happy with fabric seats.
Bought used I still got the spec I wanted, the colour and model I wanted and even the alloys I wanted plus these nice little touches that I would never have actually paid for. And all for less than the new price of a classic.

I bought and will own the car outright with no payments in 18 months (and be driving round in a 4 year old car), you leased and will be driving round in another nice shiny new one with full warranty in 3 years.

Truth is - We're both right
In any case, I do miss the odour of a new car and the non shiny steering wheel!
Anyway, as I said at the begining - good luck to you and enjoy it.

When I had a test drive in my S Class I hit the speed limiter coming off a roundabout instead of the indicator (both close together). As I floored the pedal to impress  nothing happened and I was stuck at 30 mph with a lorry up my ar*e. The MB chap knocked the limiter off much to my embarassment  (.........to think they once let me loose on areoplanes in the RAF  ) Come to think of it this reminds of the time the flying instructor asked me what my actions would be if asked to bail out. I proudly demonstrated how to "quick release "the parachute from my body, ( a useful option when ditched in the sea! )instead of pulling the rip cord  Well there were two options, I just chose the wrong one......:D

Enjoy your new car, and learn to operate it blind folded!

Re this limiter Chas there is only this little red light to show that it is on, I left mine on at 60mph when I got to the 70 zone as you say nothing until you go past kick down, mine went down to 2nd gear and shot off like a rocket. In my car and sitting possition the steering wheel obscures the red LED. There is a warning in the hand books on the use of a limiter.

What did you fly in the RAF, big ones or little, I always admire pilots.
