My 2001 '51 plate W210 E320 CDI has joined the 100 000 mile club.:)

The milestone was reached halfway across the A66 on the way to Scotland last week.

Treated the car to an interior valet yesterday to celebrate! (Exterior to be done later this week!)

When I started out in life, a Ford Prefect or 8 would get to 22k miles and need a rebore and new end shells, things have moved on a little

Indeed. I was thinking how quiet and smooth everything was (except for that annoying rattle that keeps reminding me that it is time to change the ARB drop links!)

Hi All

When I started driving some 40 years ago, 100,000 miles was an arbitrary target that few cars could hope to achieve without major attention to engine, transmission, suspension, etc. In fact there was a general understanding that you got rid of your car before it reached a 100,000 miles because exceeding it would bring expensive repair bills.

But the improvements in motor vehicle technology in 4 decades has brought tremendous improvements in longevity and 100,000 miles is easily achieved by most vehicles.

I have often wondered whether the old target was replaced by a newer one, say 200,000 250,000 or 300,000+ miles, but if there is one, I've never heard it mentioned. I should have thought 250,000 miles is a tough target but one that is easily achievable by a quality marque such as a Mercedes. What do other members think?

I purchased my Mercedes C-class at 89,000 miles but this didn't worry me in the least. However, 40 years ago my reaction to such a proposal would have been entirely different.

Maybe in the next 40 - 50 years the target will have been raised again to 1,000,000 miles (say). Indeed, I believe some older Mercedes, usually having spent their working lives as taxis, have actually reached and far exceeded this target with a degree of attention? I though I once saw 2,000,000+ miles mentioned? Still impressive though - 7 figure distances!

Hello

Wasn't theres a saab that one owner had done 1 million miles in and the engine was the same, he wrote a blog. Saab didn't seem to respond, then they offered them a new saab and took the old engine apart to see the wear.

I think my brother could rack up some silly miles, he did 120K in 18 month in a Lexus is200, thing is he changes them then so who knows what they would do. He was filling up and when you give the reg and millage he had a police patrol man behind him, read the plate 54... (couple of months old at the time, gave then the milage and the cop spoke up and said flippin heck you do nearly as many miles as us......

cheers
