I am about to have two new tyres fitted to the front. This afternoon I checked under the front of the car and found that there appeared to be no points at which a trolley jack could be used because of the plastic, protective shields.

I hate to think what damage a young fitter could do to the underside of my precious car unless he uses the jacking points provided as standard on the side of the car.

Any advice?

I would say you have lost your jack pads, did you check both sides? have a look at the rear too, as you should have pads approx. 1.5"-2", all round.
If you look you should see a hole approx. 20-25mm in diameter in the floor this is where they should be fitted. they were approx. £5-7each from MB IIRC.
