Hi, I just saw a mean looking Jeep parked outside my house the other day and found out is was a Jeep SRT8 with some mega specs for a 4x4. I wanted to get a Mercedes e55 but after seeing this im not too sure. I know they are two totally different cars but both look really good with specs to match. Both doing 0-60 in under 5 seconds and have read really good reviews on both cars. You might think the handling on the Jeep will be nothing like that of a fast sports car but have read many reviews where the handing is comparable to that of porsche, amg, etc. What do think? Merc or jeep? What looks better?

A guy near me as one, looks like every other jeep in the range to me, if I was buying a 4 x 4 again and it was not going to be a Merc it would be a Range Rover sport, just love looking at them from every angle, beautiful looking motor.

I think your mind will be made up as soon as you sit down and close the door.

Just my opinions on Jeeps....Seriously rubbish build quality....on the last shape of Grand Cherokee, we had all sorts of problems on the Jeeps that we leased out to customers.....air-con packing up (£££'s), whinning back axles, faulty alarms, dodgy electrics......I never like to rubbish a manufacturer, but Jeep won top honours for hassle factor and unreliablity....need to go and have a lie down...the memories have brought me out in a cold sweat.

Hello,

I like jeeps and seriously considered one instead of my ML, but the build quality is iffy and plastics look cheap. Ok the SRT8 is quick but its needs the full package to make a good car (like the centre exhaust though..)

Here is a proper jeep (my brothers old 4.0L Wrangler) this thing would go anywhere you pointed at.

Get the Merc,

This is NOT a gripe against the author of this particular thread, its more of a comment against this TYPE of thread.
What I dont understand for the life of me is why anybody has to post a thread LIKE this this.
Its similar to asking "which colour is best" or should I buy a "Porsche or a Mercedes" types of questions.
All you are going to get are other peoples opinions. Personally speaking, I dont have to ask what colour to have or what model or make of car I want.
And my choices may very well not always match that of Mr or Mrs average - or even anyone else's for that matter.
I know what car I want to buy. I use my own judgement. I do a bit of research. And then I go for it.
I hope nobody takes this post as a personal attack. Its not meant to be. Its just that I dont understand it.
Is it me, or does anybody else feel the same way?

I can understand the post. You get an idea and wonder whether you're a bit mad so solicit opinions from others. It's rather like talking it over with mates. You've probably made up yuour mind already but you want the reaasurance that you're not going to suddenly twig after the event.
Speaking on the Jeep/Merc debate. I have both and both are excellent. The build quality of the jeep isn't in the league of the merc and it isn't as nice a place to sit, but mine being an off roader is comfy enough for long trips but unless we're towing, I still take the merc every time. (the merc doens't have a towbar!)
That said, the review of the SRT I read said, great track car for a 4x4 but a rather uncomfortable road car due to the stiffness they have to build in. The E55 by reputation is still comfy despite being able to play with the quick stuff. So, as an overall usable piece of machinery, if I had the choice, give me the E55 every time.

I always hire a Jeep Grand Cherokee when I go to the US or Canada, however the US ones are only 2wd (even though they say 4x4 on the rear door). I really like driving them and the ones I've had have all seemed pretty good - funnily enough the last one in Canada seemed the best, and that had done 20Kms (the US hire cars are always pretty new). The Canadian also had 4WD, but it drove the quietest of them all, even at 120Km/H on concrete roads.

I'd love that kind of vehicle here, but fear it wouldn't go down well with my customers (it's bad enough having a secondhand C CLass).

In view of reliability comments made elsewhere, I'd be looking at how near the local dealer is (if it's an hours drive in horrible traffic in the wrong direction from work then you might live to regret the choice).

Also (just for interest) get a PCP quote and see what they think its final value will be in 3yrs. Having said that, the E55 will probably be pretty horrible too.

Either car is a decision of the heart - lets face it, you're only ever going to use about half the capability of the E55. An E320CDi would be the sensible option.
